His contract for this season becomes fully guaranteed on January 10, 2015 (the date all non-guaranteed contracts become guaranteed).

Got a source for that, Roy? I'm surprised Sham would have left that information out.

If bogans gets paid 5 million to stay home I would say he has possibly the best job in the world

In addition, on January 10 the base salary in all contracts becomes guaranteed for the remainder of that season .... A player must clear waivers before this date, so teams have to waive players by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on January 7th in order to have them off their rosters before January 10.

It seems likely given the opportunity that we'll use Bogans' contract to help facilitate another deal or signing similar to the way we used our trade exception, no?

Depends on if the deal would put the Celtics over the tax threshold.

So wouldn't we still have to pay a pro-rated amount of his salary (and have it count against the cap) till then?  I don't see how you could carry a guy for a couple of months, cut him, and not have to pay him for it.

We still pay him I would assume. In November, he's making $5M and $5M is on the cap. If we cut him in Dec he doesn't get paid anymore and the $5M comes off the cap. If we don't cut him and he stays on the team through Jan the we'd have to pay him if we cut him and he'd count $5M against the cap for the year.

You'd pay him for the time on the roster, which counts against the cap, but the rest of his contract is unguaranteed.

Right.  The league calendar has 168 days this year (from October 28th through April 15th), so every day on the roster (and not every game played) he counts an additional $31,463 (1/168th of his $5,285,817 salary).

Accordingly, it's highly, highly, highly unlikely Bogans is on the roster opening day.

Unless Ainge really needs the roster spot, I think there is a decent chance he carries Bogans around until January hoping he can add him to Bass and/or Thornton in a deal with picks for a big contract player from a team whose season has gone up in smoke and wants to do a salary dump.
