Draft lottery reforms coming as soon as next year

The league’s proposal gives at least the four worst teams the same chance at winning the no. 1 pick: approximately an identical 11 percent shot for each club. The odds decline slowly from there, with the team in the next spot holding a 10 percent chance. The lottery team with the best record will have a 2 percent chance of leaping to the no. 1 pick, up from the the minuscule 0.5 percent chance it has under the current system.

The proposal also calls for the drawing of the first six picks via the Ping-Pong ball lottery, sources say. The current lottery system actually involves the drawing of only the top three selections. The rest of the lottery goes in order of record, from worst to best, after the top-three drawing is over.

I wonder if LeBron would have gone back to Cleveland had they not landed Wiggins.   Cavs landing the #1 pick 3 out of 4 years is pretty crazy.   That little Gilbert kid is a human leprechaun.

how about a rule saying you cant have the number 1 pick two years in a row.  if you were to win the lottery again you get assigned the #5 pick and the previous 4 teams move up a spot.

i think the Cavs with all these #1 picks is more outrageous than the tanking, and now according to this report the league is increasing the chances of occurrences of crap like this happening again.  This is bigger than the tanking thing for me, probably because theres really nothing they can do that will eliminate tanking without causing some sort of major uproar.

Coincidences actually do happen.  There is no way I will ever believe that the NBA lottery is fixed.  Given how they do it, the number of observers, and given that the risk of trying to fix the lottery so far outweighs the gain, it just wouldn't be worth it.   If Silver (or Stern) was ever caught conspiring to perpetrate this type of fraud, I am certain that losing his job would be the least of his worries.

I like this proposal. Evening out the lotto odds would do a lot to limit tanking. They might not even need to go this drastic witht the parity. But i like where they are heading with this.

I still like the idea of any any team can win the first 3 picks. Then next 3 picks between lotto bound teams with the worse record team picking no worse than 6th.

I like the main ideas - I was just thinking the other day that drawing the top 5 would reduce tanking quite a bit.  Flattening out the odds helps too, but they went away from that last time when Orlando won from the last spot and people screamed bloody murder.

The problem this creates is a team that is close to making the play-offs with no hope of going past the first round, is incentivized to tank out of the last spot.  So tanking will occur, just at a different place.
