Gary Washburn @GwashburnGlobe: Silver said the league is considering the idea of a midseason tournament, similar to soccer. Interesting. #nba

"Silver's exploratory idea involves a tournament that would be showcased in Las Vegas. Similar to soccer, it would essentially be a quick tourney for NBA teams to win a trophy outside of the NBA Championship." - sbnation

I don't care for this at all, unless there's another incentive other than a trophy.

I don't want to risk injury from a potential championship run.

I don't think players should play more games, it's long enough as it is.

I have no interest if this tournament would mean a shorter season. I like consistency.

If this would replace all-star,  I'm all for it.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I think it's just another move towards the marketing strategy they've been honing for years to make the NBA the US's only true year-long sport.

season is long enough with two seasons already. The regular season and the playoff. The NBA already has a season like soccer, they just do not realize it. They have the regular season which should be for the league championship. Then they have the playoffs (which is the knockout competition) and should be akin to soccer's FA Cup in England.

You need different skillsets for each competition. The league championship being the most demanding. If there was a champion crowned at the end of the regular season it will spur fan interest and increased player dedication to the regular season.

Yeah same here, if this will be a-week tournament replacing all star then it's all good
they can have 1 whole week like March Madness kind of tournament then this well be awesome

Why not? Include the D-League to make it like the FA Cup of the EPL. Two trophies in one season.

My main concern would have to be injuries. Usually all star week gives the players much needed rest. They would need to extend the season or dare I say cut the amount of games. The lockout year when there were less games, every game meant something and I thought it was more exciting. If they cut the games and had a tourney that would be the only way I see this work without causing injury.

Yeah.

I don't think the players would even play the darn games to be honest.

They'd just mail it in and send in a bunch of scrubs.

I think it's just another move towards the marketing strategy they've been honing for years to make the NBA the US's only true year-long sport.

They should make the minor leagues more interesting then.

Right now, D-League broadcasts are of terrible quality. Probably only once in a while would people get interested (because their favorite teams' players are in the D-League).

They could probably increase roster sizes and encourage farming. Summer league would be more exciting. Good for everyone.

You start off the year with the young ones. You get into the regular season. You race to the playoffs. Championship.

A mid-season championship I wouldn't really care much about.

What would be fun is if the fans voted for the 8 best players of the first half. They then became Captains and drafted 5 players each to form 8 teams that would play a elimination Tourney over 4 days.

It would be interesting only if they have international teams play in it as well , like some of the European club teams and the Chinese teams.

This does not interest me on any level at all. The NBA needs to export NBA culture. Not import Euro soccer culture.

This is the dumbest thing I've read in a while. This won't work. Unless the NBA is planning on redoing the entire system. It works in Europe because there is no playoff format for the league. The league winner is the team who gets the most points. The cup is the knockout tournament that crowns a winner. Having a 2nd knockout tournament just sounds stupid.
