Poll

Assume for a moment that Marcus is a total dud like Ron Mercer.  Which of the guys we passed on are most likely to make our blood boil for years to come because we could have picked him? This question only pertains to the 6th pick, not the 17th.

Gary Harris
9 (18.4%)
Noah Vonleh
12 (24.5%)
Julius Randle

I'm basing the 5 choices above on the summer league games we've seen so far.  And obviously I didn't list anyone who wasn't on the board when we picked.

I wish I could pick more options, but it seems I'm limited to 5.  If you think it'll be someone else, put them in the comments thread I guess.

I personally fear that Dougie McFreshie is going to really haunt us one day.  I was extremely skeptical of him prior to the draft.  But after looking at his college stats and the scouting reports again, and from his first SL game, I'm convinced he's going to be a real stud.  AND he not only plays a position of need for us, but he has pretty elite skills for that position that we also desperately need  - scoring the basketball.

I say Harris, but that is only if we did not take Smart.

I think we probably would have been better served taking McDermott and Harris rather than Smart and Young.  Both guys would have been ready to contribute right away, and both are good shooters, McDermott is an outstanding shooter.  We would really pick up our offense, and Rondo would have some awesome shooters to kick to.

As a side note, I wonder if the Celtics could have worked a trade with ORL in which we gave them 6 and 17 for the 4th pick, in which case we could have gotten Exum.  That would have been the best of all results for us.  It would depend on how confident ORL would be that Utah would not have selected Gordon.  That would be hard to gauge.

I'm only going to consider guys who were still on the board when Ainge made his selections.

No problems with the Smart selection at #6.

At #17, I was really surprised that Ainge passed on Harris. Yeah, I know, "another undersized guard, blah, blah."

To me, Harris seemed to be the BPA; you pick that guy, and figure out the roster later.

I'm with you on this one all the way, especially about McD.  I do like Young though, and I think he's got some great potential.  But Gary Harris may very well be the better player in hindsight.

If randle starts dropping 20 and 10 every night, it's going to be annoying.

Assuming Smart is the bust of all busts, Randle's got to be the "if only" pick, especially because he went to the Lakers.

As in "if only we had snagged Randle and the Lakers ended up with Smart..."

I don't think that's very realistic, though.

None of the listed. I am very delighted with our additions in Smart and Young.

Out of that list I would say early on McDermott. However I think in the end Marcus will leave the Cs happy with their pick.

Later in the draft I think Nick Johnson is going to be a guy alot of teams are kicking themselves for passing on. He will be productive off of Houstons bench this year and will have a nice long career as a Deltone West type guard (without the mental health issues). Patrick Young is another guy who is going to make ever team look silly for not buying into the 2nd round to get him. Barring injury he will be a 10+ year pro who defends and rebounds at a very high level. If Perk is worth 10mill a season then this kid should have been drafted.

Agreed.  Smart was the right choice at 6, but at 17 i had Young as my 2nd favorite.  Should've went with Harris IMO.

both young and harris were good choices. most had young being taken higher than 17 so i think it was smart to grab him.
