Yeah, but then how do they fill the 3 spot with little to no cap space left over?  The big advantage of keeping Parsons is they can fill their cap space with a high-level talent, then match on Parsons.  An MLE guy is not likely to help them much.

Plus, if Phoenix matches, Houston is now out Parsons, Bledsoe, and probably every other possible top free agent they'd have a shot at.  Too risky.

Houston would have cap space next summer if they miss on Bledsoe. Not so risky.

Still have the cap space to spend on one year contracts for squad depth this season.

If Houston could sign Melo, they should think of trading Harding for Rondo and a couple of picks.  I think Rondo would be awesome there, he could set Dwight up for a lot of easy hoops, and set up Melo for all the open jumpers he could ask for. It would be a good move for us.  Hardin would be a better fit with Smart and Bradley than Rondo is.  We have enough first round picks to make it the deal "fair" to both sides.  Salary disparity can easily be solved with our non-guaranteed contracts.   Probably does not make sense for Houston, though, unless they can also get Anthony.
