The other thing too is I'm not sure Cleveland should be in such a hurry to make that deal.  Automatically they become at least a top 4 team in the conference.  If I were running them I'd wait to see how the pieces they have fit together.  You can get by in year 1 with low cost veteran free agents to fill out the rotation.  I also like the idea of bringing Wiggins along slowly.  LeBron takes all the pressure off him.

Bring in Love and you may find yourself with a hole or two that's not so easily fixed cause you're strangled by the cap.

Again, to respond to the big free agent coming to Boston talk next summer -- the next, big time free agent to sign in Boston will be the first.

And, again, when have the Celtics ever had the legit cap room to sign a "big-time" free agent?

Not sure of that answer, but I would guess at some point the team had enough money. From everything I have seen, the top free agents want three things -- a real chance to contend, great climate and night life, and low taxes. I think Boston loses out in all three.

This line of thinking has been stated so many times, but I think it is way overblown.  The Celtics have never been in the running for a big time free agent.  When have we ever had the cap space and a desirable team (player wise) when a big time free agent was available.  I don't remember a single time.

When have we ever lost a big time player to free agency?  I don't recall it ever happening. When have our best players ever demanded a trade?  That happens around the league all the time, but I don't remember it ever happening to the Celtics.

The Red Sox have no problems signing top free agents.  Sure the play in the summer, but then what about the Patriots who also play in the winter?  They have no problems getting free agents, at least since Belichik arrived.

Sure, weather and night life are positives, but it's not the be all end all.  Players spend nearly half the season traveling and can live wherever they want in the offseason.  The most important factors are the money, chance to contend, and playing for a well run organization with a strong fan base.

Broussard: Cavs offer Dion Waiters, Anthony Bennett, first round pick to Wolves for Kevin Love.

Boston's offer is better.

That is a pretty horrible offer imo.. Bennett didn't really show that he is an NBA player last season and Waiters showed little to no improvement between his 1st and second season while shooting 42% from the field and 34% from 3. That call probably gets a hang up.

I warned about this yesterday.  This is a dance.

Cavs have to offer something without Wiggins.  Wolves decline.  Boston goes all-in with an offer of Sully + Oly + 87 1st round picks...

Some media "leaks" that the Wolves are strongly considering Boston's offer.  Fans here get a bunch of false hope...

Cavs cave and include Wiggins.  Done deal.  Inevitable.

The Cavs are playing hardball. All they need is for Love to set the bridge on fire and announce "I won't resign anywhere but Cleveland." If he does that, the Wolves will be stuck taking what Cleveland gives them.

They will have brought it on themselves, though. They could have taken a much better offer at any time. They held out.

I really think the Cavs are hesitant to give up Wiggins. I just think Love wants out of Minny and doesn't really care where he ends up.

I still think this would be a pretty solid trade framework for both teams

Love, Martin, Pekovic

for

Wiggins, Waiters, Thompson, Bennett, Varejao

By getting Pekovic as well as Love, Cleveland can more comfortably agree to trade Wiggins.  Martin makes a lot more sense on a title contending team like Cleveland as well.  Minnesota gets to wipe the slate clean with a lot of young players (including obviously Wiggins) to combine with Rubio, Dieng, LaVine, Robinson, etc.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Nice, way for the Cavs to insult Flip with that terrible offer.  That is great news

This ends with Flip both insulted and injured. I guarantee that.

They will give up Wiggins.  But honestly, that's an unprecedented package for a star demanding a trade.   When Flip lands Wiggins + Bennett for Love, he should earn GM of the year, because typically stars fetch some "meh" package like Andre Miller + Dano Galinari.... not a potentially transcendent superstar like Wiggins.

Like I said, I really doubt it but we'll see.

Flip screwed himself but I could easily see Minny telling Cleveland to pound sand.  Is Cleveland going to not sign guys now in order to keep cap space for Love next year?  The Cavs are going to sign enough guys now that they won't have room to give Love a max deal, which means they'd still need to do a sign-n-trade to get him.

CLE would be idiots to hold out on the Wiggins issue.  I understand the allure of potential but c'mon.....

You're talking the difference between getting a championship or multiple championships in the forseeable future if they add Love to the mix or risk missing out because you got too wrapped up in a rookie's ceiling.

It'd be foolish.

That's my point. Denver also waffled for half a year while Melo picked his preferred destination. In the end, New York had them over a barrel.

Wiggins is already better than Kevin Love right now.

horrible trade. Martin is on the decline and waiters age makes him much more valuable than martin. You also underestimate chemistry. Lebron loves varejao, so why move him? Then giving away bennet for no reason? Overkill

Sam Amico who's a columnist for FoxSportsOhio.com and hosts a weekly show "Cavaliers In the Paint" tweets a response about Wiggins for Love.

Quote
Sam Amico @SamAmicoFSO  ?  12h

Cavs source told me Thurs Wiggins untouchable. But that's probably Q for TWolves. RT @SteveSpayde: Do Cavs get Love without Wiggins in deal?

BTW....Sam was one of the guys that was saying his sources told him LeBron would return.  He's pretty plugged in with the Cavs.
