...now in lieu of this trade with BK and CLE.

That's pretty sweet.

Also means, next summer no more excuses about Celts not having cap space.

Cavs, Nets, Celtics Agree Upon Three-Team Trade
Jul 09, 2014 10:39 AM EDT

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics have agreed upon a three-team trade.

The trade allows the Cavaliers to create approximately $24 million in cap space, with LeBron James' max contract being worth $20.7 million.

The Nets will acquire Jarrett Jack and Sergey Karasev.

The Celtics acquire Tyler Zeller, Marcus Thornton and the Cavaliers' 2016 first round pick. Boston will have $33 million in contracts coming off the books in Thornton, Rajon Rondo, Brandon Bass and Joel Anthony.

But even this is misleading. The trade didn't help in that in all. Had the trade never occurred, they'd actually have more salary flexibility (by a small amount) without Zeller.

Moreover, that number assumes we would renounce the rights to Rajon Rondo, which certainly isn't happening.

That's not to knock the trade; I like it. But the Celtics aren't in any better financial position now than they were yesterday. The numbers just look gaudier after adding Thornton's expiring deal.

If renouncing Rondo means creating that much cap space, then by all means in my book.

But think in terms of trades at the deadline.

Yeah but is Rondo really that much of a free agent draw here in Boston to begin with?

33 mil in cap space... to be honest, I don't think Danny is done here...I believe he will continue to shed as much salary as possible. Even if he didn't, he can trade people via Bradley or the Green

33 alone can re-sign Rondo (hopefully for cheap), and another star roughly around the 15 mil range

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
With the contracts that are getting thrown around lately, I would be surprised if Jeff Green picked up his player option, which means even more cap space.

I would like to see them bring back Rondo as well as target Marc Gasol, DeAndre Jordan, Roy Hibbert, Al Jefferson, Millsap, and of course Kevin Love.

We don't need to be great this year, but if we could show improvement to the point that free agents think we have a bright future then we could end up being really good next year.

OR (and though I'd hate to wait this long, it could be worth it and maybe its DA's long term plan) Danny clears even more space between now and next summer and goes nuts the summer of 2016. Take a look at this list of FAs for that summer

-Anthony Davis
-Kevin Durant
-Andre Drummond
-Michael Carter Williams
-Dwight Howard (I believe can opt out)
-Roy Hibbert
-Al Horford
-Damian Lillard
-Joakim Noah
-Nerlens Noel
-Deron Williams
-Brook Lopez

Are there any restricted free agents in the draft class of 2011 who makes you want to use cap space to sign them to an offer sheet similar to what Gordon Heyward is apparently getting and Greg Monroe is likely to get?

What if Minny doesn't trade Love, and we just sign him as a free agent next summer?

Yes. But still, the article from realgm is misleading.

And honestly, that could end up being our best case scenario.

I mean I'd love to get Love now, but if Flip remains stubborn and decides to hang onto him, then next summer we offer him a max deal and we wouldn't have had to trade anything either.
