He was in a car accident. He missed workouts with other teams. And the downside of holding him out to get healthy is trivial...nothing I've seen about Young suggests he's even close to ready to play in the NBA, so he's going to be a practice squad guy anyway once the season starts. He can learn the ropes then.

So using your theory here Smart will be a practice squad guy.

Both out of the league in a year.

Occam's razor! Woooooooo.

... that is not the right way to shave, as it were.

Its become a lot more common to hardball with draft picks the amount of the salary slot they get.

This injury was reported way before the draft and was the reason he fell to us at 17.

When i read the op conspiracy theory, i wasnt thinking that the celts were "staging" a car accident , but rather embellishing the severity of the neck injury.

To be honest, if they are not exaggerating the injury for some unknown reason, i am pretty worried that this kid has been sitting with no bball activities for a month with a strained neck. It doesnt seem typical unless there are concussion symptoms. Even with concussion symptoms, a month is a long time.

There were concussion symptoms, and it's been about 2.5 weeks.  I think this also should demonstrate how unimportant summer league is.

Concussion like symptoms can last a whole lot longer than a month.

I got a pretty good chuckle out of this.

I had this friend in undergrad that swore everything was a "plot" by the government. Called everybody that doesn't agree with his theories "sheep" and "naive". This thread reminded me of him.

OMG the Celtics hired someone to initiate the car accident... we're through the looking glass here, people.

My mistake.  I thought I read somewhere that the accident occurred the week before the draft, not two weeks.  Still, the injury isn't so serious he couldn't travel to Florida.  I think there's little to be concerned about.

Double negative.  I'll try again:  The injury isn't so serious that it prevented him from traveling to Florida.  I think there's little to be concerned about.

No one suggested that they made up the accident but they also have not come out and said anything very definitive about exactly what the injury is.  They interviewed the summer league coach and his comment was "all I know is they told me he is injured and can't play".  It doesn't seem like a normal way to handle an injury, even to an unsigned rookie.

I hope he is being held out because he is part of a trade for Kevin Love.  Maybe Avery Bradley (not signed) and Sullinger (not playing) are in it too but not Marcus Smart and Olynyk since they are playing.  There are of course plenty of simpler explanations as to why Bradley is not signed and Sullinger is not playing (you wouldn't expect a 3rd year guy to play summer league).  Maybe it is just that I am overly hopeful that we might actually still be in the running get Love.

Also, if Smart is not signed, how is he playing in the summer league?  Is his contract guaranteed so to speak (or maybe obligated is a better word) even if he gets injured?

Regarding Kevin Love trades:

Several years ago Ainge traded for a top 5 NBA talent, still in his prime, from Minny for prospects and part players.  That trade played a large part in bringing a title to Boston and Minnesota has been poor to mediocre since then.

Now, I don't live in Minnesota, or follow the TWolves but Id guess that trade while viewed as a necessity, left a very negative impression on the franchise and fan base.  It was a terribly lopsided trade when looking at the outcomes, EVEN if it was they best they could get.

In 2014, Minnesota is not going to repeat this scenario.  Id say they will take a lesser deal than we've offered or let him walk before trading another elite All-Star power forward to the Celtics for unproven prospects and assets.  If they did this again and it lead to another Celtics title run while they kept missing the playoffs, the franchise would become an even larger joke and for the rest of my lifetime be considered the Celtics b****.

Did you hear Flip's comments about the entitled Celtics fans recently?  Some suggested that was to make the C's bump their offer up.  For the TWolves to make this trade it would have to be heavily lopsided in their favor and we don't have the assets to do it.

I doubt the injury itself is a issue...at this stage ...either he is hurt or he isn't ...seems like a lot of blow n smoke

More than Likely it had to do with people all lawyered up ...whom ever was liable ....we no nothing ..so that tells me stuff behind the media is going on.or Being settled ....longer he acts hurt better chance a settlement is in his favor.....if he just goes out and plays ...judge says meh...no claim here......so is he really hurt or play n possum for a lawyer.

So little is heard , said ...it's so hush hush ...just makes me think somehow a bunch of possible injury law suits or something legal is more the issue than his neck

Washburn suggested in his article today that they might be holding Young out in order to trade him, so in my estimation everyone who made fun of OP should be laying on the Tommy Points.
We're the ones we've been waiting for.

True, but--Orlando was completely screwed by the Lakers--when they STOLE Shaq...and yet---they dealt Dwight Howard to them---so, anything is possible.
