I remember a few weeks ago someone floated the idea of using the TE to sign Gortat.
More then a few over confident know it alls on the board said (paraphrased) "no you're wrong, Gortats going to get way more then $10.2 m"
Turns out he's getting pretty much exactly that amount.
Just want to point this because I've gotten really tired of the amount of "no, you're wrong" posts on this blog. All those people who think they have superior knowledge, maybe you want to step back and take a less definitive stance. Makes for more interesting conversations and less egg on the face.
I feel pretty confident in stating that you'd have to offer Gortat more than what Washington was willing to give him in order to get the Wizards to agree to a sign-and-trade.
Keep in mind that only the Wizards can offer Gortat a fifth year. Gortat's contract, if it includes maximum 7.5% Bird right raises, would begin at $10.43m. The value of Gortat's contract for the first four years would be around $46.41m. For another team to give him the same amount of money over four years, a contract would have to start out at $10.87m. If you needed to give him $50m over four years to compensate for the lack of a fifth year and outbid Washington, the contract would have to start at $11.71m. If he demanded $55m over four years, you would have to start at $12.88m.
So, it is very likely true that you'd have to give a contract that starts out at $11-13m to give a competitive offer. That sort of deal would not fit into the TPE.
