Clearing room for LeBron.  If they clear DeMarre Carroll, they'll be able to sign him outright at a max deal.  Not going to happen, likely, but LeBron needs an alternative to Miami for negotiations, and the Hawks could be an interesting option.

Given that Ferry was the GM when LeBron left, I'm surprised ATL would even consider him considering them.

One wonders though if they might make a big run at Melo though. A Melo-Milsap-Horford frontline is impressive.

yeah that sounds pretty good.  I just dont think 'Melo would even give them a chance, its either Dallas or Chicago I think.

Cant blame them for taking a chance though, if Im an Atlanta fan though Im wondering why we've waited til now to try and make a big splash, that teams been stuck trying to make it over the hump for years.

ATL would actually be a very good fit for a max level swingman.  A Horford, Millsap, Payne big man rotation is good, and a backcourt of Teague and Korver would be a great fit with a penetrating 3.  Plus Schroder still has some intriguing upside.

Probably tried before, but didn't have much of an opportunity with Josh Smith's game stagnating after he signed his second contract.  But they can easily create $20 million in cap room to add a max star to their nucleus, in a year when there are a lot of max stars available.  Whether they succeed or not remains to be seen, but Ferry's done a good job putting together a roster while creating that opportunity.

I'm not a fan of Melo, but if the opportunity comes that Melo and the Celtics agree on a contract, I can see Atlanta being a good location to send Green and eat Green's salary to make enough room for Melo.

Also, if Melo is set on leaving New York, I'm sure the Knicks wouldn't mind a Green consolation price + extra. But who knows.
