Would Cuban be willing to part with 2 future (unprotected) first rounds picks to acquire Rondo? Dirk should still have a few good years left in him and they now have T. Chandler and Felton. Rondo could put them over the top.. Maybe they take Green + Rondo if they are able to work out a 3 team trade. A starting line up of Rondo, Ellis, Green/Marion, Dirk, and T. Chandler is solid. They could also use Rondo as bait to lure Melo and forgo J. Green...
Starting :Rondo, Ellis, Melo, Dirk, T. Chandler
Bench: V. Carter, Marion, Felton, B. Wright.
That's a championship contender.
If "Fireworks" were going to happen, they would have on Draft night. Its time to accept the rebuild and get what you can for the 28.5 year old, all-star PG. Ship him out west to Dallas. They will have him for at least 2 full years and the Celts can continue to stockpile future assets (post Dirk picks), which should be in the top 10.
Ok so first off, our 28.5yr old PG named Rondo is in the final yr of the 4yr deal the Celtics signed him to back in 2011. So if Rondo were to be traded this offseason, which I highly doubt, then whichever team trades for him would only have him for 1yr, not 2yrs. Unless, of course, he agreed to an extension pre-trade.,
Aside from that, I think Danny is smarter than to give up his best player, who happens to be a proven all-star PG, as well as the best passer in the game for.....a cpl late 1st rnd picks. (And seeing as that trade would help turn Dallas into a contender, those picks would almost definitely be late in the first round.) Unless they trade us picks from 4 or 5yrs down the road, which doesn't help our rebuild much.
As for the fine details, let's take a look at Dallas' current salary situation.
Tyson Chandler- 14.86mill
Monte Ellis- 8.36mill
Brandon Wright 5.0mill
Raymond Felton 3.79mill
Jae Crowder 915k
Gal Mekel 816k
Ricky Ledo 816k
That's just current guaranteed contracts.
Now let's add in the other potential contracts.
Rajon Rondo- 11.9mill
Dirk Nowitzki- 10mill
(and that's if Dirk is a true gentleman, and takes a massive hometown paycut for his team. He already mentioned that he wanted to re-sign for 2-3 more yrs, and we all know that he's worth more like 12mill per yr on a contract like that. However, I can see him being a good guy like KG or Duncan, and ignoring bigger offers from other teams in order to sign with his hometown team for less (10mill per) or whatever.
Carmelo Anthony- 17mill
I think most of us would agree that Melo is Not signing for less than 17mill per yr. That's already a big paycut for him, and for some reason, he doesn't quite strike me at the generous type. Who knows, maybe he will prove me wrong.
Anyhow,
Now we get to filling out the bench / rest of the team.
Shawn Marion- He is known to be a hometown favorite, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Dallas retain him as a soild backup SF/PF, He is still a soild rebounder, and puts up pretty efficient numbers as well. His defense isn't what it used to be, but he's still solid.
Vince Carter- He is another player that I can see retiring as a Mav. I think he will play for another yr or two though, especially if they build a contender this summer. Vinsanity still has some game, especially for a backup, And Mark Cuban has been on the record saying that he would love to see Vince finish his career in Dallas.
Devin Harris- Surely this team would either need a backup PG. That means they will have to either re-sign Devin Harris, or look for a cheaper alternative.
After adding just the players who be under contract on your proposed team, that's over
73mill. Correct me if I'm wrong, cause I did that in my head, so I rounded a few of the smaller numbers down. And that's before the bench / rest of the team is filled out. I know the Cubes is known to be a spender when needbe, but the total salary of that team would be wayy over the luxury tax. And knows how the Cubes will feel about the new luxury tax penalties.
