Ainge on @Toucherandrich "I think Marcus and Rondo can easily be back court mates. Marcus can play with Rondo and Avery"

Quote
Jay O ‏@MrTrpleDouble10
Ainge said that drafting Marcus Smart meant "nothing" to Rondo's future here

Quote
Jay O ‏@MrTrpleDouble10
Ainge wouldn't say who he would have drafted first overall if they were able to trade for the top pick

Quote
Ben Rohrbach ‏@brohrbach
Ainge said the Celtics did try to trade up to No. 1, but there were "no real conversations."

Quote
Jay O ‏@MrTrpleDouble10
Ainge said if Embiid fell to 6th. they would have taken him, but the injury history did scare them "he was not red-flagged"

Quote
Jay O ‏@MrTrpleDouble10
Ainge: spent time over the last month trying to "make the big splash, and we'll continue to try over the summer. Haven't lost hope on that"

Quote
Ben Rohrbach ‏@brohrbach
Ainge says he's still holding out hope he can make a splash this summer.

Quote
Boston Celtics ‏@celtics
Ainge on Young: "We think that James has a chance to be a very complete player. We think he's a two-way player. He can defend his position."

Quote
Ben Rohrbach ‏@brohrbach
Ainge on his two first-round picks: "I don't have expectations of them turning around our franchise." Fireworks!

Quote
Ben Rohrbach ‏@brohrbach
Ainge reiterated his opinion that this draft was overhyped. He added that Smart & Young could be contributors to a good team.

It's really only just begun, in my opinion. The team that have now may not be the same by training camp, now that the team know what they can offer.

Did they ask Ainge anything about Love?

Only about potential trades, Ainge said something about trying that and still trying in the coming time before the season.

thats awesome. Means smart was a contingency plan B or C.

Eh, I think the odds of a Love trade happening are pretty low now. Unless Minnesota is high on Smart we don't have a big piece to trade for him at this point. They easily could be, but we have no way to know.

I think Ainge is really underrating Marcus Smart here. I think he can turn a franchise around int he same mold that Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, and Dwayne Wade did. He is definitely that kind of player, with that kind of skill set. I'm hoping he sticks and isn't used in a trade.

There's no need to set those kinds of expectations on a kid.  I do think Ainge believes that Smart has the potential to be a franchise cornerstone.  But it's not going to happen this year or next, and if you say he can turn the franchise around, that's the timeline fans will expect.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Why put that type of pressure on Smart and give Boston fans (of all fans) that type of expectation that he's the next *insert comparison*.  Let us be pleasantly surprised with the type of player he turns out to be instead of giving him a timeline to become the player we expect.

You'd have to put other players ahead of him as well, starting with Wiggins. Obviously Smart wasn't Danny's first choice if he could have any player in the draft.

Don't understand what I interpret to be your negativity.  If you're picking 6th, you're probably not going to get the top guy on your draft board, so by definition he wasn't plan A.  I think it's very clear that the Celtics had been very interested in Smart throughout the process, and was someone they were very comfortable in picking.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.
