No Afflalo, no Asik. What's happening

My number 2 and 3 offseason targets gone. With those offers how could we not go after them?

why would you tie up your cap for roleplayers...Afflalo/asik arent bringing us to the promised land or playoffs without another star like Love in hand.

I think Ainge is caught in a tough spot right now.  There would be no reason to trade for an Asik or Afflalo unless they can get a Love.  If no Love (or other big star)then rebuild.  They don't want to be stuck with a team of mediocre guys.  These trades are happening to soon.

Agreed.  If we can't get a legit star, guys like Asik and Afflalo are the fast track to cap issues and mediocrity.

exactly, and clearly Affalo isnt a big "dealbreaker" in making a love deal or I am sure ainge would have gladly coughed up a 2nd rounder for Afalo and re-routed him to minnesota

Sadly, yeah.  I do like the kid though.

Yeah ...I'd keep him too for a reasonable contract...but not some deal over three yrs though.

I didn't expect the Celtics to acquire Afflalo because I expect them to bring back Bradley, even if it means overpaying by a million or two per year.  The only way it makes sense is if Afflalo was going to be rerouted in a trade for someone like Love and I am becoming increasingly convinced that Minnesota is legitimately interested in trying to make the playoffs with Love and all the rumors aren't a smokescreen or a bargaining ploy.

I'm wondering if this means that Ainge doesn't want to commit to any moves until he can negotiate with free agents.

it could also be that Ainge doesn't want to commit to anyone long term because he's eyeing 2015 offseason to have cap space (is that when Wallace's contract becomes useful?)

i do find the 2 deals strange though. The Mavs-NY trade is more "normal" i guess, in that both sides gave up around equal value.

I didn't want either player, and I'm glad we didn't waste assets in trying to get them. It's fine if you liked those players, you are entitled to that opinion, but you need your head checked if you think that not getting them is somehow an unmitigated disaster.

Afflalo is an excessively mediocre player. Below average rebounder for a SF, a minus defender, and just okay on offense. Shoots the 3 well, but doesn't do much else. And he's old enough that he's not going to be getting significantly better any time soon.

Same goes for Asik. Specialist role player. Nothing wrong with that, but these types of players are a dime a dozen every off season.

I agree that if we didn't land a big name then these 2 guys are pointless right now.  Maybe this is a sign that we are not getting anybody big, so Danny passed on them.

Yep, exactly.  I think this more or less squashes some peoples hopes that we were getting these 2 plus Love or something similar.  Danny is going after big fish, and then filling the rest out.  If he gets no big fish then there's no point in these guys.
