Tweets from Marc Stein may shed some light on why we're looking to get a 2nd:

Quote
Something to watch tonight: Hearing we could be in for high number of international picks in the 20-to-30 range of this once-vaunted draft

Reason being: Lust for cap space & luxury tax concerns could limit number of teams willing to take players in that range or buy those picks

This would push guys who were once pegged for the end of the 1st into the 2nd... probably very good value there this year.s

2nd round contracts aren't guaranteed, which would make them the perfect thing to send back to Houston in a trade for Lin and either their first this year or that future first they're getting from NO.

I feel like Danny literally picks a random person from his "pool" of 2nd round choices. Colton Iverson felt extremely random to me. Colton is probably never going to play in the NBA, so this is dannys way of gambling.

I think etwaun Moore was the time he wasn't random, instead hoping to make jajuan look good and raise his stock value by playing with his high school and college buddy. He ended up drafting someone better than jajuan, see why you gamble?

I agree - Ainge's track record is pretty good on his "called shot" draft picks, by that I mean when he has a player he likes and moves up or trades to get them.  Rondo and Olynyk worked out pretty well and JuJuan turned into Courtney Lee, which turned into Bayless and saved us several million dollars in salary.  If he moves up or buys a pick, it's most likely because there is someone he is sure of.  I think he saw something in Colton, although granted I have no clue what that was.

People hammer Ainge on things like "Fab Melo was a bad pick", but the next few picks were John Jenkins, Jared Cunningham, Tony Wroten, Miles Plumlee, Arnett Moultrie, Perry Jones III, Marquis Teague, Festus Ezeli and Jeffery Taylor.  I mean Plumlee is okay, but most of those guys are on the 76ers bench right now.  That is almost worse than being out of the NBA.  He just picked the tallest guy and called it a day.

Anyways it's super hard to focus at work today, I should have just called in sick.

To me this doesn't sound good.  >:( Danny trying to stockpile talent so that Stevens can develop them into trade able assets in 2015.
This is NOT good

As opposed to Danny making us a contender in 2015?  I doubt anything short of LBJ and Melo coming here will make us a contender in the short term.  And that is about as high on the unlikely/impossible scale as it gets.

If Danny can't get his hands on KLove to start the contending rebuild (which will still take 2-3 years), I think he'll do the smart thing: stockpile talent and invest in good future cap management.  Then he'll strike again when the iron is hot.
