So I saw this video pop up on my news feed...

it's a video of Emily Austin interviewing Sully and his progress during his offseason

http://www.nba.com/celtics/sullinger-offseason-workout

Do you guys think he lost weight? I can't really tell a difference

I thought his rear end looked exactly the same industrial size that it was during the season, so that's discouraging.

Also, the fact he couldn't do a full extension one-leg deadlift with what appeared to be a nominal weight didn't look good.

Not an optimist about this.

He said he's in the 280s and trying to get down to 260 by training camp.

Not likely, but at least he'll be in less of a position to complain when he has to play more center this year behind Embiid.

I had the sound off. This is horrible.

I really thought he was ~260 and trying to get down to 240 or so. He has no business playing at anything above 250 lbs.

sullinger was a 13ppg, 8rpg last year...I dont know if its too much to expect him to become a 16ppg, 10rpg player next year. that seems realistic

I would have guessed he was in the 280s last year and I think 260 sounds like a good weight for him.  However, it is disappointing he is still in the 280s.

Hey, hey, hey....

Is he related to Mel Turpin?

I watched the workout and it is no wonder he is hefty.  That workout was pitiful and looked easy as cake.  Dude needs to be doing a mix of fast cardio and weights to lose pounds.   The medicine ball shot with his shot is too increase range.   He has a nice touch inside of 17 feet.   I think he is weak on the range of his three and it messes with his release.  Strengthening it where it is a more natural shot may help him.

He could easily gain muscle too that would offset a lot of the weight loss.  He only did 9 reps on the bench at the combine.

Per 36 he is more like 17/10. Should get more playing time next season with Hump gone.

Repo

Yeah, nine reps at 185 is downright weak for a man his size.  There is good weight and bad weight.   Muscle weighs more than fat, though.

He has tremendous natural/functional physical strength due to his broad shoulders, wide hips and large behind.  He could improve so much though if he took his training seriously.  Only 9 reps at 185 for a guy like him shows he has never put much time into the gym.

And that's the concern with him - will years of natural basketball talent and having the game come easy to him allow him to put in necessary work to improve?

I don't think so.  You can't compare him at Per 36 minutes he won't get that.  I think Sully is an undersized big and I would rather give his minutes to KO.  Why should he receive more minutes?  KO is bigger with more ability.  He should receive about the same minutes IMO and less if he keeps shooting 3's....

The biggest issue with giving Sully more minutes is his conditioning. Unless that improves, it'll be hard to give him more than 30 minutes a night just to watch him labor through the 4th quarter.
