All this yawning about Embiid reminds me of two years ago, when Sully was projected to go top 10 so nobody ever formed an attachment to him.
When draft day came, most people had full on crushes for Royce White or Andrew Nicholson. When those second rate prospects went before pick 21, Sully dropping all the way from top 10 to 21 was small compensation.
Because Embiid was the consensus and undisputed runaway favorite to be the #1 pick, people are now slow to warm up to him now that we might actually have a chance to get him. Just like when people convinced themselves Andrew Nicholson and Royce White were better prospects than Sullinger.
I think Front Offices fall into this psychological trap as well, which is why White and Nicholson got drafted so high.
At the most extreme, falling into this trap can cause you to make a promise to a guy like JR Giddens, when you don't leave open the possibility of guys projected to be drafted much higher (DeAndre Jordan, Mario Chalmers) might actually fall to you.
