Trade Rondo plus whatever is necessary (future 1st, Olynyk, Bass, ?) to Orlando for the 4th pick. Orlando needs a PG and is rumored to want Exum with the 4th.

Celtics select Embiid with the 4th pick.

Celtics select Exum or Smart with the 6th pick (by trading with Orlando, we not only secure Embiid, but we eliminate competition for Exum and Smart).

Celtics end up with a good, young PG, with the choice of either Exum or Smart, and a potential (when healthy) franchise center.

Why would Orlando do that when they can draft Smart or Exum themselves? You said yourself they need a PG, makes zero sense. And then have to pay RR $$$$. For a future first and KO? I dont see that at all.

You would have a better chance pulling that over the Cavs.

again, it's knowing what you have in Rondo plus maybe another 1st, plus maybe another asset versus drafting a young, somewhat uncertain player.

If you wanted to be competitive now, would you want Rondo or Exum/Smart? I'll take Rondo every time. The only reason I suggest trading him is if we do not get Love, he'll probably walk anyway because he's probably not interested in a full-blown rebuild. In that case, I would rather go young with PG and center.

normally I would agree with you, but I don't think they will trade the no. 1 for Rondo. I thinks we have a better chance for Orlando if we sweeten the pot beyond Rondo (another 1st plus another player, Green?). They want a PG. They hope Exum or Smart will be as good as Rondo. It's a trade off: experience, know what we will have, but older and costs more versus an inexperienced unknown, but who costs less and we control for longer. It all depend if your tired of being a lottery team or not. I can hang in there for awhile longer if we don grab Love.

But Orlando has a young team, who says they want to be competitive now?  Why put Rondo (28 years old and on an expiring deal), next to 22 year old Oladipo, 23 year old Vucevic, and 21 year old Tobias Harris? It makes more sense for them to draft an unproven young guy that can grow with the rest of their team.

rockets - geez, I hope not
kings - possibly

Lakers are a better fit, but aside from the 7th, what else would you want? Maybe you still get Smart at 7 and Embiid slips to 6th. In that case, it works as well.

Naturally, I understand your logic. It makes perfect sense. I just think teams that haven't been competitive for a while are anxious to see progress (owners, fan interest, marketing, etc.).

...plus, not all teams are run as well as the Celtics

I hope we do not either, any player we get should have to agree for a long term extension.

I'd be giddy if something like this happened... but there's no way Orlando gives up the #4 for Rondo.

I believe Love was agreeable to that with us...  From what I've heard the Magic don't evne want to do that (sign someone long term yet).  They wan tto keep their options open...

I think he'd re-sign with the Lakers.    I think getting #7 from the lakers is more plausible than getting #8 and Mclemore from the Kings.  Rondo has already made it known he will not play for the Kings.

Something like Rondo for #7 and Nash's expiring contract (Nash prob retires)... then they'd have enough cap space to also make a run at Lebron/Melo.... trot out Kobe, Rondo and Bron.  When Kobe retires they'l just find some way to add Durant.   Cuz it's the Lakers and everything always goes their way.
