I feel like even though Wyc is a wealthy guy, he's never going to be as famous as he is now as the principal owner of the Celtics. Someone like Prokhorov isn't American and as far as I know his wealth and business is all tied up in Russia. That means he doesn't really gain any prestige in owning the Nets in the same way that Wyc does by owning the Celts. If Prokhorov was interested in expanding his ventures in NYC it would make sense to keep the team but doesn't he barely spend any time in town?

If you look around wealthy Russian have bought a lot of teams in many sports. I think it`s like game to them. What Prokhorov didn`t count was that the rules in NBA are not the ones he is used to. You can`t buy a championship team as you can in Europe where your only limit in bidding for players is the size of you wallet.

Not surprising. Once he couldn't buy a championship quickly he's going to get bored. This was a buy low sell high purchase for him from the beginning.

My biggest fear was that he would just spend the money and get Lebron to come over and than our picks from them would be crap.

This could be very, very nice, even for trade reasons.

Pretty much.

nets GM have no problem in terms of money, because of the rich owner
they can buy 2nd round pick if they wanted too
if blatche decides to leave and go to the pelicans, loosing him and reggie evans and collins
my option is trying to gamble on varejao but i doubt he takes MLE, he is a good player to have if your team is contending for a championship, or kaman maybe or if livingston was offered more money, the problem is there is no sign in trade,
a team with a lot of caps space can acquire them
livingston to Minnesota
blatche to New Orleans

i don't see lopez playing at the start of the season
with a foul trouble guy plumlee
and kg back in limitted minutes
they got a problem, if they can get a descent back-up center with kg sometimes on PF position like duncan sometimes C/PF,
with thorton 8million, either trade him and add fillers like a pick (bogdanovic), example for mozgov if denver want something from the nets
a back-pg for MLE are easy to find
pierce will get his money of 10 or 12 million
they will make another run

chemistry is not an issue because you only add 1 bigman and back-up PG, if they find a cheap SG then that's also good, i think they don't need a PF,
sometimes KG/PLUMLEE/MIRZA/AK47/PIERCE can all play at PF position

prokhorov promised that nets will win a championship in 1 to 5 years, depends on which year is it, so i think he is not selling the team

The Russian economy is pretty crap right now too, so he may be taking losses elsewhere and wanting to free up the money that's tied up in the Nets.

...plus he'll probably make at least a quarter-billion in profit for owning them for what, 4 years or so?  Not a bad return.

Not to mention he's had some real geopolitical concerns, what with sanctions being put on some Russian businesses.  He's avoided that so far, considering he's not a very close ally of Putin, but it's probably safer for him to not have his basketball team's assets frozen because Putin decides that Latvia is looking especially attractive today.

Yeah, I think the last two or three years of franchise sales have basically proven that the last lockout was a fraud -- something to keep in mind for 2017.

He saw what Sterling got and wants to cash it, it was not as easy to win as he hoped.

Yeah, the 2017 strike was pretty much assured when the 2011 lockout was resolved.  Hopefully Silver can be more proactive at settling things because I'd be pretty p---ed if I was a player being locked out for months and giving up major concessions because the owners were pleading poverty, then seeing them pocketing hundreds of millions in profit on every sale.

Relatedly, I don't understand why municipalities are so repeatedly so willing to give owners hundreds of millions of dollars towards building stadiums.  It just boggles my mind.

Because no politician wants to be known as the person who let *insert beloved local pro sports team* leave town.
