Ok we have all talked about if we build the next big three from trades. As I am sitting watching these Finals games. I just say to my self if you are patient and go in and build a team from the ground up good things can happen. This team has got it all young players to vets. Yes you may have to get lucky and get a guy like Duncan but the players that this team gets just and just rebuilds in the draft is crazy. Thoughts

The beginning of the Spurs way was drafting David Robinson, then Tim Duncan with high picks, then being sharp with ahead of the game scouting to keep hitting late 1st rounders out of the ball park

Who used their sole tanking season to fire the coach and take over.

The same guy who would later get fired right before OKC drafted Durant. Poor dude missed out on coaching a pair of All-Time talents.

CP, there's no question that the Spurs are a well run franchise. If there was a system for building a culture where all-stars want to stay with your franchise for less money than they can make elsewhere, though, every single team in the NBA would be doing it.

The Spurs were not patient when they were bad. The Spurs were patient when they were good. They were disciplined about maintaining their success by paying extra attention to overachieving international prospects instead of underachieving ncaa prospects and high profile square-peg free agents. We can admire them for that, sure, but when you are on top, you have the luxury of making low-risk-low-reward-moves. It's not difficult to be disciplined when (a) you're already a top team, and (b) your stars are both aging gracefully and somehow not interested in money.

But yeah, let's be smart!

Lets be honest. Really all they did was draft Duncan.

I'm obi only half joking, but really once you have TD you really can't be all that bad.

spurs were more lucky assembling this team than anything. but they have done a great job maintaining that luck.

any team trying to intentionally repeat what they have done is an exercise in futility. I don't want that to be my team.

Exactly.  If someone can guarantee me that we'd draft Tim Duncan (when we were already one of the 12 best teams when healthy) then I'm totally onboard with looking for overseas value late in the draft and finding/developing popovich.  Sorry but no-one can just "repeat" what they did. It took a lot of luck on top of their consistency and smart moves.

Let's not forget about Parker.  He was drafted after the all star Joseph Forte!   :o

Don't be mistaken, they do have their own stars and their own big 3.  But having solid pieces around the big 3 is what is so great about them.

Well, not really. They also mostly managed to keep a competent team around him. But that second part is pretty meaningless without drafting Duncan.

DUNK-can. That's why they're so good.

Does Ginobili mean crafty scorer in Spanish or Italian?

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
If we can draft someone this year who is a plus passer for his position (Gordon, Smart, Anderson, Saric) our ball movement could be very good next year. I believe Sully and KO are good at passing and cutting, Bradley is a good cutter, and Rondo is an excellent passer. If we can add another good passer we could have a team that makes up for the lack of a go to isolation scorer by creating open shots via savvy passing and cuts.

That being said, the Spurs also play good defense and adding Anderson or Saric to our team would only make our porous defense worse.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19
