Just stumbled across this article which I found very interesting..

http://redsarmy.com/2014/06/10/marcin-gortat-seems-pretty-open-to-joining-the-celtics/

I'd certainly be very happy with this deal.  Gortat gives us a capable (if not elite) rim protector who is also a very capable scorer and rebounder, plus we should be able to get him on a half reasonable deal. Wih reports earlier this year that 'Ainge promised Sully he'd get a center', I wonder if there's something to this?

Plus I have to say,  the thought of a Love/Gortat front court leaves me mighty excited.

Sign me up! Didn't think we had a chance at him so I have not even been thinking about him, but I really like his game, and likes what I saw from him in the playoffs.

Sorry, I did not realise this was already brought up.  I did do a quick browse through the threads but didn't see anything!

is that enough to get past lebron - melo - wade - bosh - allen?

I don't think there is any one player in this league who (on his own) will make Boston good enough to get past Miami - doesn't matter how good that player is.  Cleveland, for example, did not win a title by acquiring Lebron James - it wasn't until Miami signed him and put suitable talent around him that the Heat become champions.

It's going to take a number of moves to convert this bottom 5 Celtics team into a championship contender, and I think acquiring Gortat could be the type of move that might help Boston move towards that goal.

The thing I really like about Gortat is his versatility.

Gortat has has a nice balance between size, mobility, offensive skill, defensive skill, IQ and rebounding ability which makes him a very easy fit on just about any team.  He's probably even versatile to play PF if the situation suited.

Boston is a team in rebuild mode, and you just don't know what this roster will look like 5 months from now.  Will Danny make a move to bring in Kevin Love?  Will he make a trade to bring Josh Smith to Boston in return for some spare parts?  Will he choose to draft Randle/Gordon/Vonleh and build around that draft pick as our PF of the future?  Will all of the plans fail over, leaving us with no choice but to move forward with Sully or Olynyk as the PF of the future?

It doesn't really matter which way Danny goes, because Gortat has the versatility to pair nicely with any one of those guys listed above.

Another nice thing is that Gortat should present solid value.  By no means would he be cheap to sign, but I would expect a contact in the $8M-$11M range would be about right, and that's pretty good value for a big man with his level of talent.

I think adding Gortat to our current group just gives us a ton of versatility moving forward.

I agree. Gortat is a great player and I think he is the best center we can realistically get.

Agreed, Gortat would be sweet!

Especially if we got Love.

I think I would as well... Asik is a better defender by a bit but Gortat is miles better on the offensive end. Kills it with the pick and roll play as well.

Well we do have that $10.3m trade exception. Sign and trade possibility with Washington?

SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan

Well, if Gortat is miles ahead of Asik on the offensive end, then Asik is miles ahead of Gorat on the defensive end.  Probably comes down to what you prefer and personally, it would be Asik.

If we have a chance to get either or, I'd go with Gortat as the more well-rounded player.  acquiring either only makes sense if we're getting a bigtime player first

+1

with Asik a fairly close 2nd, Okafor 3rd, if healthy, though they're all fairly close.

Where's the cap space for this coming from? If we are talking straight free agency signing.

Well we have the traded player exception that we can unload... and potential sign and trade if necessary.
