Separates him from Reggie Miller? I thought it was universally accepted that Miller was 'better' than Allen - I guess that maybe an argument for another day.

I've always thought that RA was a slightly better player than Miller.  What hurt Ray is that he didn't get to play any high profile games until he was in his mid-30s.  Miller was in the spotlight for a good chunk of his prime.

If no one else will say it I will. I think you are misremembering things because Ray Allen is having success and that success is in Miami. Ray  drove lane a lot and dunked it and made up and under layups with the Celtics. The man score over 50 points for us one game in the playoffs. Not every one of those points came on run around screen catch and shoots or three pointers.

Ray Allen plays his game and when he can he drives, when it is there to be had. Nothing has changed except maybe he is a lot more rested at this time of year because he is coming off the bench, is playing less minutes and is now a top 5 option rather than a top three option. His game is still very much the same.

There was a lot of attention on Ray when he shared a backcourt with Rondo.  He's getting easier shots now.

His current coach doesn't let him bog down the offense by running off screen after screen in a desperate attempt to create enough space between him and younger defenders to get a shot off.

Ray is healthy and being the 4th or 5th option helps. What I hate is Ray Allen single handedly saved Bron Bron's rep. If he doesn't hit that 3 last year no one is talking about him being better than Larry or comparable to Jordan. Bron was choking down the stretch of that game and Ray bailed him out.

Because the defense is focused on Lebron most of the time. Giving more easy opportunities for Allen. He's a 4th/5th option on Miami while he was 2nd/3rd on the Celtics.

He seems a lot healthier too

10 less minutes or so a game and a much easier role in an offense will do that for you.

When he was on the Celtics--he wore himself out on the defensive end a lot...his legs were not as rested on his jumpers....Docs/Thibs Defense took a ton of energy.
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

All good points. I probably have selective memory when it comes to thinking about his time in Boston. He certainly had big games and big moments, but I can't help but remember how he allowed JJ Redick to completely shut him down, and how all of his horrific shooting slumps came at the worst possible times, etc.

Yeah... the Heat don't need to run such a convoluted offense to generate open looks... because they have other guys who are capable of scoring other than Ray drawing attention and keeping the floor spaced properly.  In Boston's peak, they were an elite defensive team, but only 3 of their starting 5 were competent scorers.  The other two were offensively inept.

My thoughts exactly, but hey, what mercenaries are for?  Two things stand out to me, watching him post-Celtics: 1)  especially last night, I have never seen Ray Allen go after rebounds, key rebounds, like he has with the Heat.  Where was that effort in Game 7?  He was the one always cheating up the court.  KG only had 3, but that was because he was helping so much on defense that you need your guards to rebound.  Rondo had 7-8 I think, Pierce had 10, and Ray had, wait for it...2!!!!  That game showed the difference between him and Kobe, just like in 1998, that game 7 showed the difference between Reggie and Michael.  MJ and Bryant made up for their lack of shooting by doing whatever it took to win, which, in both games, happened to be rebounding, plus getting ridiculous calls and non-calls.  It's like Ray thought it was beneath him or something, I'm not sure, but that still ticks me off.  2)  Doc's offense sucked,  plain and simple, but Ray always dribbled too much, and, a few plays aside, I never thought that the guy was a great ball-handler.  With Miami, he doesn't try to turn the corner, largely because he doesn't have to, but why couldn't he have done that with us?  Just take one step behind the pick and drill it.  Quit with this pick and roll crap, although I know that that's mostly on Doc.  Ray even occasionally posts up when he has a matchup advantage, not that he's very good at that.  He's only got that Jordan-wannabe fadeaway jumper, but still.  Why couldn't we have done that against Fisher?  It's just frustrating.

On an unrelated front, if you haven't visited this thread, http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=70754.0, entitled 'Calling All Music Lovers,' I'd encourage you to do so.  Wait until you hear her sing!

Is there a better time to have a horrific shooting slump?

The Heat have players that probably command more attention than anyone else in the league, more attention than anyone else Ray played with in his career did. It's true that Boston only had 3 good scorers in their starting lineup at their peak. Their point guard was offensively inept in the "I don't pay attention to anything on offense besides scoring" vein.

I have a new policy of just ignoring any thread in which Ray Allen is called Judas.  Just wanted to post in here and let everyone know.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Ray was playing around 35mpg for the C's as opposed to 25 for Miami. If he needs to take a regular season game off for rest, it's not a big deal.

I don't think he's doing anything unexpected these playoffs. He just looks like 2011 Ray, instead of 2012 bone-spurred disgruntled Ray.
