The Houston Rockets plan to decline the fourth-year option on forward Chandler Parsons' contract, freeing him to become a restricted free agent this summer, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Rockets are pursuing Minnesota's Kevin Love in trade talks too, and Parsons could hold sign-and-trade possibilities.

In one scenario, Houston could secure three max-out players ? including Howard, Harden and a potential star free agent ? and then re-sign Parsons to an extension below the max-level range. Parsons could command in the $12 million to $13 million annual range, league executives tell Yahoo Sports.

I really don't know, but this is getting interesting. In the article they also have their eyes on Lebron, Bosh, and Melo.

You still have to get Parsons to agree to sign in Minnesota. I think he'll get offers from other interesting teams - say Phoenix or even the Lakers. If he signs an offer sheet somewhere else, they can't flip him for Love. It's super risky.

Parsons can command $12 -$13 mil? Seems a little high for him, no?

In this economy, no. He's pretty well rounded as a player and relatively efficient. If you have the pieces in place, it's a worthy gamble. I can def see a team like New Orleans trying to work a sign and trade, or the Phoenix making a run at him. He could be an intriguing option for the Lakers and Cavs if neither of those teams pull a big fish.

For the life of me, Id never thought they'd do this. It makes room for Melo if they send him via sign and trade, but Chandler Parsons, he's a good player, but I don't think he's really head and shoulders above Gallinari or Batum.

And the rules regarding cap holds are not in Houston's favor. The minute one of Parsons's suitors put an offer officially to Parsons, that's his new cap hold. If any team wants to offer a starting salary in the $10 million range, that's Parsons's cap hold. Houston can than renounce their rights, and still move him via sign and trade, but they can't retain him without leaving his cap hold on the books.

If Houston wanted to create cap space, they could just cut Covington and Daniels, at no cost, and create the same amount as Parsons's option, which still counts as their cap hold, and then some.

So basically, it really only makes sense if they're trying to move him via sign and trade, unless I'm missing something.

Gosh, whoever gives Parsons that type of money is going to regret it for a long time.

I actually can't help but wonder if this is also a ploy to look to acquire Rondo. Parsons via sign and trade, if Love isn't happening, makes some sense. Not the return Id wanted, but some sense.

It's also probably a ploy for Love.

OK, now we see what Kevin Love's true intentions were this past weekend....

1) If he was trying to pressure other teams to jump into the fray and outbid the Celtics because he didn't want to be here, then Houston might be on their way to doing so...

2) If he was trying to scout Boston because he wants to be here, but knows the Celtics need to up the ante, then we'll see if they do so...

Daryl Morey v. Danny Ainge at the table...

Let's break it down and see what you guys think:

Rockets Trade Assets: T Jones, C Parsons, Asik & the 25th pick for Love & Kevin Martin (rough idea)

Celtics Trade Assets: Jared Sullinger/KO, the 6th pick, the Clips pick next year, Brandon Bass & Salary Relief for Love & Kevin Martin (rough idea)

Sullinger/KO vs T Jones (Pretty much a wash)
6th pick vs. Parsons (Depends on what Minny believes Parsons true ceiling is v. Randle/Vonleh, etc.)
The Clips Pick vs 25th pick this year (Slight edge to HOU b/c depth in draft this yr)
Bass/Salary Relief vs Asik (Bass/Salary Relief because Minny has Pekovic)

I know many of you don't want to overpay, but if the above scenario starts to play out, it might be up to Ainge to sweeten the deal with this year's #17 pick or one of Brooklyn's...

Either way, Flip Saunders is thrilled...Minnesota just gained some leverage. UNLESS Love demands Boston.

Is it possible that they go for a star (e.g. Melo) and if they whiff, just match another team's offer to Parsons? Or if said star signs with them, match Parsons' offer anyway to get/keep both? If possible, this was a very smart move by Morey. Parsons wouldn't sign with Houston in 2015 as an unrestricted free agent if the team gets Melo and relegates Parsons to option #4 or the bench.

I can't imagine he won't at least get 10/yr. 12-13 seems reasonable given just how reliable and well-rounded he really is. Is there a team in the NBA that wouldn't at least be interested in him at the right price? He is the kind of player a great team needs to fill up a stat sheet without being too selfish about it.

I thought it was a potential move to possibly clear room for Rondo too.
