  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Thinking about the bigger picture, I can't see Danny giving up as much for Kevin Love as we may think.
After all, Danny knows how important all those picks will be for acquiring another star player and how badly we'll need caproom to sign the right pieces around Love and Rondo.

I think the plan is to get Love with Sully, the #6 and the #17 pick+ fillers ie Green oe Bass. I think the big part of this that isn't expected so much is that Gerald Wallace will be going to Minny as part of this deal. We may need to add another pick from Brooklyn, but he MUST go.

The question is, who/what is the next penny to drop with the rest of our picks and Kelly Olynyk?
I'm still not 100% sure on the pick scenario, BUT....
Does this team compete with Miami? I think it's got a pretty good shot considering the offensive firepower/rebounding and the scoring from Love, Deng, Martin, Rondo....
Cap experts please give your two cents but I'm pretty sure under the new cap and tax threshold this works...

Part 1)
BOSTON SENDS:
2014 #6 pick+ 2014 #17 pick+Jarred Sullinger+ Jeff Green+Gerald Wallace.

MINNESOTA SENDS:
Kevin Love+Kevin Martin.

Part 2)
BOSTON SENDS:
Brandon Bass+2015 Clippers pick

HOUSTON SENDS:
OMER ASIK

BOSTON SIGNS:
Luol Deng 4 years $56 million

We now have Love, Rondo and Deng, with Asik expiring for when Marc Gasol hits the free agency market.
We have a team that hopefully gets Rondo to sign to another long term friendly deal so we can give Love the big $$$ he wants too.
Deng has just turned 29 (he's less than a year older than Rondo) and averaged 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. He's also an excellent defender and is in his prime at 29 years old.

So our starting 5 looks like:
Rondo-13 Million
Martin- 7 million
Deng-14 million
Love- bird rights up to maximum (not sure what his max is?..19 million?)
Asik- 8 million

That's $61 million of a $63.2 million cap (not including bench guys/min guys) with a luxury tax threshold of $77 million.
Now we can use the Pierce trade exception for one of these deals and someone with better cap knowledge may be able to confirm exactly which player we can do that with? (Perhaps Asik if we send a cheaper player than Bass?)
We can then sign Rondo over the cap with his bird rights once again and we could also add Pierce with the MLE.
Anyway, the point is that this roster is a very serious threat in the East.
Martin comes off the cap in 2017 but his contract is pretty tradeable if we need to move him and some of our Brooklyn picks for a better player down the road. Asik also expires in 2015-16 but again we'll have his Bird rights if we need them and want him.

Just adding my 2 cents about Wallace.  I don't think he NEEDS to go.  He can be a valuable bench player on a playoff team if we have our star players in place even if he is way overpaid.  If we don't get a third star this summer, he could possibly be an important expiring contract next summer with other picks to land that player.

Well in this scenario, Danny forcces the Wolves to take back his contract in order for us to give up all these picks they'll want. I mean they'll stink anyway, but they'll be able to take back Wallace's deal and use it as an expiring next off season.
Point being we need Wallace's salary off our books to go after someone like Deng.

All two?

Conventional thought is that it would take at least one pick, likely two, to offload Wallace's contract by itself.

You'll have to double the number of picks to Minnesota for them to bite on this. Wallace's contract is poison to a rebuilding team.

I think Love+Rondo+Green+Asik+Bradley would have a better chance of winning the East.  Part of that is because you would be able to have a stronger bench by not having to renounce all free agents and losing the full MLE and the TPE to create cap space to sign a free agent like Deng.

I don't think it's as 'poison' as you think it is. He expires in 2 seasons time and the Wolves without Love aren't really going anywhere in that time.
They'll be developing those picks on low salaries so Wallace is much of a muchness to them if they want to do the rebuild correctly.

If worse comes to worst and the scenario you're describing occurs, then we bite the bullet and give them another pick (Brooklyn) or two(our own in 2016) for taking on Wallace's deal.
Remember they get Jeff Green back who is arguably worth a mid-late first round pick on a friendly contract whilst they dump Martin's contract (who's deal is longer than Green's contract).

Pick 6+ pick 17+Sully+ Green is an enormous haul for a guy who's leaving anyway and who's trade value continues to go down the later Minnesota waits to deal him. Part of the price is taking back Wallace so Love's new team can afford to put a star or two around him.

Regardless, we can do this deal- even if we had to give up an extra pick or two, and still make a contender with multiple Brooklyn picks left over for the future.
Question is, if pulled off, do you think this team is a threat in the East?

I like the idea of a Green, Love, Asik back court.  I think they compliment each other well.  Love's shooting will open up more driving lanes for Green and Rondo.  Asik can balance out the team d.  I think if you can keep KO in that situation as a backup for Love / Asik it would be a great situation for KO.

This is assuming that Sully is part of the Love deal.  I think a bigger worry about the 2 all stars + 2 other good guys approach is you need bench scoring.  Hopefully KO can help with that.  PP coming back on a team friendly deal as a 6th man, bench scoring punch, might be interesting.

Could make the ECF with that team.  Don't know if it would win the East.

This.  No one's beating LeBron for the next couple years (whether he's with Miami or elsewhere).  That's my issue with choosing the present over the future; no matter who we get by cashing in our chips now, I feel like our ceiling is being the Knicks to LeBron's Jordan.  I do like that team if we're getting Love but I'd rather wait LeBron out.

I think it's up there. I'm a little wary of acquiring Deng, whose tires seem to have a fair amount of tread already.

Of course, I'm of the belief that a Rondo+Bradley+Green+Love+Asik team can win the Atlantic, worth HCA in at least the first round of the playoffs.

Take out Bradley add in Stephenson.

Rondo Stephenson green love Asik, KO as the 6th man. That Could make serious noise in the east. Especially if we could get Bradley for his qo (he is best for as a bench player). Sign Paul pierce with the mle.

Rondo
Stephenson
Green
Love
Asik

Pierce, KO, Bradley off the bench. That could compete for a championship IMHO.

Dallas already beat Bron.  The Spurs SHOULD have beaten him last year.  Are we going to wait out Durant as well?

^^^ Exactly... Why not just wait for Anthony Davis and Andrew Wiggins to retire as well so we can start competing... -_-
