Neither KO or Sully are rim protectors, but they are both good rebounders and Sully showed he can put a body on any center in the league.
If these guys had elite defense from the SF position, could they work together as our starting lineup of the future?
Aaron Gordon has a lot of young Josh Smith in him defensively, with his length and athleticism to block shots from the SF position, and he has the versatility to guard all the stretch 4s that KO and Sully struggle to guard as much as any center.
The defensive rebounding of this trio would be outstanding, and Gordon would be like another rim protecting PF on the floor, even at SF.
I still like Smart slightly better as a prospect than Gordon, but Smart might not even be available, and Gordon might be a better fit with what we already have on the roster, and KO and Sully are both good players who need as many minutes as possible.
Gordon is also younger than Smart, which would fit with drafting for the long-term and accepting that we're not going to win a title in 14-15 no matter what we do.
What do you think? Gordon would be a great PnR defender at both the 3 and 4. Sully and KO can put a body on bigs well enough that the constant threat of Gordon flying in for the helpside block might mitigate some or much of KO and Sully's limitations as rim protectors.
If we get beat on open jumpers by SFs or PFs because Gordon's providing elite help defense, we just live with it, and perhaps draft a project defensive center at 17 or next year.
Thoughts?
