There is no doubt in my mind, we need Kevin Love on this team next year and if it happens, I expect a wink-wink with his agent that there would be a high likelihood he will resign with us next year.

However, from everything I am reading, I believe the bidding will be very competitive. We will likely have to pay more than most feel he's worth. Nevertheless, I say do it. We should still have lots of picks left and Danny is pretty good at playing hardball.

It's going to be an interesting month.

The Celtics will need a defensive center, even more, if they trade for Love. By all means, try to get KL, but getting him is only the first step.

No love please.  Take your chances to sign him for the season after next season as a FA. No need to give up assets right now

We get him and asik anyways and we are still not a top 4 or 6 team in the league. I rather rebuild and aim for other 2015 fas

A struggle?

Sigh.

No struggle here. Trade the 6 and whatever it takes to get Kevin Love. An EASY decision.

The draft isn't the forum for a successful rebuild. History is clear on that.

I agree but in fairness the one open question is the cost for Love.   I would probably not do "whatever it takes" if the cost leaves us without the assets to make another big move.

I'm really struggling to decide whether I want the Celtics to trade for Love and thus lose the sixth pick or if we sould take the rebuild more slowly and do it "by the book".

On one hand we can try to get Kevin Love and get in the playoffs next season but such a trade would create so many holes on the team that would make continuing to improve further. But still getting a player like Love is pretty crazy and Danny Ainge might be able to sign some pieces to fill the gaps the trade created.

On the other hand, it might be very beneficial to be more patient. We could probably get a very solid player in the draft, for example Aaron Gordon who can play the three. Then Jeff Green could be traded to a rim protector like Greg Monroe. Maybe the Celtics will not be a contendor right away but they will have a nice core. Then the season after that the C's can sign a big name and become a contender.

If the Celtics can spare trading either Sullinger or Olynyk and giving Bass getting Love would be great, but if Danny Ainge sees that he has to give up that much talent I think you need to go to the second option and take your time.

Please reply why you have made your choice and what you think about the situation.

Here's a real good article by Chris Forsberg from ESPN Boston addressing this exact issue:

http://espn.go.com/boston/columns/nba/story/_/id/10975763/boston-celtics-benefit-opting-slow-rebuild-rather-quick-fix

Well worth the read.

Here's one summary-type quote:

Quote
Let's be clear: There are too many moving parts to know exactly how the Celtics' offseason will play out. If the right deals materialize, and established talent can be added at reasonable rates, Boston absolutely shouldn't hesitate to reload this summer.

But the (Kevin) Lovefest this week left us with a case of sticker shock. Yes, the prospects of adding a bona fide NBA star and slamming the rebuilding accelerator is mighty intriguing, but at what price? Is it truly worthwhile to part with multiple first-round draft picks and young talent  and other assets to add a single talent to the roster? In the NBA, maybe more than any other sport, having individual star power is supremely important, but having a deep, balanced and affordable roster doesn't hurt, either.

Given that, I'm all for getting Love or Melo, with no guarantees from them about resigning.

They can get the most $$$ from us if we trade for them. If we have to sign and trade them, so be it, but at least we get some assets back for them. I doubt that they take significantly less $$$ to play where the want to play.

If they decide not to stay, that probably means that things aren't going in the right direction here, especially with Rondo, and it all gets blown up then anyway.

I get the idea.

But unless there's a superstar in the Sully/Olynyk/#6/#17 core, I'm not sure whether all that cap space is going to mean much to free agents who are looking to get paid AND win.

whatever it takes?  hell no.  a fair deal, yes.    Minny can ask for #6, the 2 unprotected Nets picks and the one we can swap as well as Sully and cap relief and there's no way a smart GM would agree to that.  If THAT'S what it would take, the price is too high.

#6, Sully, cap relief and their choice one of the following: #17, AB S&T or lesser of the C's/Clips pick next year with no protection or better of the C's/Clips next year but with lottery protection.

I said in a number of threads on this topic, Love is not KG and we should not pay a KG-level price.  it's foolish to give away the farm and leave ourselves bereft of enough assets to acquire more talent.

To crib from a classic,
