Now I am not sure if this would get merged but I would like to have some replies to this train of thought.
I just do not know why you trade for Love, who would need a max deal, is not great on D and is not KG just because he is coming from Minnesota.
KG was mature, took his teams to the playoffs at least, could play center while being a defensive genius and brought a fire that Love does not seem to have.
We have a Love clone on our team already: Jared Sullinger. All metrics point to it. Other players on other teams talk about it. We also have this Love clone for cheap for another three years. Let us assume Sullinger comes back in somewhat better shape and gives us 17 and 11 next year. Not a stretch at all. Would you rather get 17 and 11 at 1.5 million or 25 and 12 for 15 Million? Yes, eight points is a lot but eight points for 13.5 million? Also assumes Sullinger does not pop up to say 20 to 22 points a game. Now you are paying 13.5 million for 5 to 3 points more. Both players are the same defensively, although there is some evidence to indicate that Sullinger may be better.
Another point: Love had the luxury of playing next to a great center (Pekovic early, then Dieng later) while poor Sullinger PLAYED center. Can we let Sullinger play his position for a bit before we ship him to Target-Land?
Final Point: Sullinger's numbers were clearly skewed while he played out of position, out of shape and was told to shoot threes to get better at it during the season. You improve/change your shooting habits in the off season, not while during the actual season. Sullinger did this at the behest of Coach Stevens as part of long term development. They both talked about it.
It seems to me we need a real center, who at least blocks shots and cleans the glass and a shooting guard or a small forward who can be a real scoring threat. Someone who can get get his own shot.
I just do not see how getting Love for the price we would have to pay is worth it. Now I know everyone will say that there would be another move but from where? With what? Just picks? If we got Love, Rondo and some other player, is that enough to win the title? I do not see it.
I would much rather stand pat and see how badly the Nets crater next year (They are going to) before we make a move. Also, we most likely will get three first round picks next draft which should be a decent one. I think Philly makes the playoffs next year which gets us their pick. Finally, if Miami stays intact for another year and Indiana gets itself together the odds of us getting by them right away are not great. I think we must exercise some patience here.
Just to throw one more grenade: I honestly would rather trade Rondo for another high pick in this draft along with other assets than go for Love. I think long term that is the better option. I just do not see the third player out there that we could get that puts us over the top.
I may be wrong, but I doubt it.
