NEW YORK - Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams will undergo surgery on both ankles Tuesday, the team announced Thursday.

"He will have a bone chip removed from his right ankle, and the left ankle will have an arthroscopic cleanout with removal of spurs from both the front and back of the ankle," team foot and ankle specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley, who will perform the surgery, said in a statement issued by the Nets.

In January, Williams received a cortisone shot and a PRP injection in both ankles. He then received a cortisone shot and an anti-inflammatory injection prior to Game 7 of the team's first-round series against the Toronto Raptors. Last season, Williams received three sets of cortisone shots and a PRP injection due to inflammation in both ankles.

"I have been worried about [getting so many cortisone shots]," Williams said with a laugh. "I've had a lot."
*CB Miami Heat*
Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

He'll still be ready by the beginning of the season, won't he?

Sounds similar to when Ray had those double ankle surgery and came back fine.  Williams is a limitless younger when Ray had it done so maybe he will come out of this ok.

I hope this helps him. One of my favourite players to watch when he is on his game.

Ray came back fine in a reduced role as a third option. Williams is in the middle of a $100 million contract.

Reason why in a Love trade, Boston needs to hold onto the Nets picks.  Give an extra pick if needs be.

I wonder if they really will do a single surgery for this or if its just press release verbage, that'd be really atypical.

Is three cortisone shots in a year an overly large amount?

Even fully healthy at the top of his game, Deron Williams was never 3/4s the player that Ray Allen was.

The way it should work is this, for any year where we have multiple draft picks:

If we're trying to not overpay, we give them the lesser of our first round picks.
If we're trying to make giving them a single pick worth more, we give them they greater of our two picks.

We need to divorce ourselves from the concept of giving them the Clippers pick or Brooklyn's pick or our pick or whatever.  We either give ourselves insurance that we won't be trading #1 overall, and likely not a lottery pick, or we give the other team a better chance for a great pick than simply offering a single team's pick, because now they have two team's they can root against, instead of just one.

That's a hard one -- different play styles, different systems, even as ball dominant guards. Ray was never the passer Williams was, and arguably never possessed his handles, either.

Its the maximum recommended amount do to the increased joint deteroriation that tends to occur with them. And that's for normal people who's job isn't likely to bang up ankles as much as Williams.

Sounds like they maxed out all other options and surgery was all that was left.

I've never been a Deron fan, but he was pretty solid on those Utah teams, better than 3/4 what Ray was in any case.

Eh. It makes for a good debate. I could see multiple sides to the argument.  I, for one, always thought Deron was overrated, even in Utah.
