  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I might change the order of these guys as we get more info from workouts but I've watched enough of them to decide. (Except Saric actually, I haven't seen anything other than his scouting youtube stuff). The one thing you'll notice is that all these guys have a bit of 'grit n balls' to them as KG would say  8)

1)Vonleh because of age (18, second youngest in this draft after Aaron Gordon), upside and size. His hands are huge, his arms are enormously long, he's probably still growing height wise. His jumping reaches were enormous. People are worried about his IQ but no one is mentioning his fire. He's a winner and he hates losing- that spells focus to me. At 18 yrs old you have just a world of potential there as a rim protector, post player, stretch 4/5 etc...

2) Smart: He's got the 'killer' winner's mentality that Rondo has and KG had. He's emotional and he's done some dumb stuff but he's still a kid and he wears his heart on his sleeve.
Lance Stephenson did so as well and he's arguably been the Pacers best player this playoffs.
His shot needs work, but his form is excellent and he attacks the rim relentlessly.
In a disciplined system with the right guidance and coaching this kid could become an All Star combo guard.
One of the best things about him is he plays hard on both ends, he also wants the ball in his hands when it counts and very few skilled athletes like Smart have that quality.
His numbers at Oklahoma State were eerily similar to Dwyane Wade's numbers after 2 seasons as Marquette- Smart's numbers this season were also hurt because of their system in my opinion. This is a guy that loves getting to the rim and getting free throws.- I would love to see him with Rondo and would cross my fingers that his shot improves another 5%

3) Saric: Long, athletic, smart and skilled. Can shoot the lights out. Could be the best player out of this draft in 5 years time and the biggest steal. At his age, he's led his Euro club to a championship and he ALSO has that killer fire about him. Size, scoring, smarts. I do worry about his athleticism but he's smart enough and agile enough make up for what he lacks in speed and strength on the offensive end. Major concern for me would be how well he'd guard NBA small forwards and containing speed.

4)Aaron Gordon: like Vonleh, he's YOUNG and strong. Built like an ox and could probably put on some more muscle without losing his athleticism. I don't know what position he'll play. He wants to play small forward but he needs serious work on the offensive end. He's got the speed and athleticism to defend the best, and if he can somehow use his great IQ to master his dribbling and ball skills in dribble breakdowns vs NBA small forwards and elite defenders he could be very similar to Andre Iquadala. He's a safe pick in the sense that at the very least he'll probably be an All NBA defender. He's so young that I'd be willing to gamble that he'll have enough time to develop his dribble game enough to attack the rim like Lebron and defend like Brandon Bass vs other hybrid forwards. Not sure if he'll ever fix that terrible jumpshot though.

Anyway, that's my summary. I actually hope we trade for Kevin Love and Asik, and then sign Lance Stephenson or Aaron Afflalo, but if we don't, I want one of those guys.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Good post.

My order is

Smart - max effort on both ends
Saric - highly skilled offensive player
Gordon - crazy athlete, defensive stopper
Vonleh - tall  (sorry, just not feeling it for Noah)

For about a week now I've been fully 100% behind Vonleh if we were picking anywhere lower than 4.

He's the pick that would require the most patience, as he is definitely a major project. But you have to remember that he's only 18, so to have that kind of standing reach and wingspan (extremities reach their full length prior to the torso catching up) it's entirely plausible he grows another 2-3 inches before he's 20. He's already 245, which as he ages and works in NBA strength training programs, will likely goes up as well.

He has a future as a legit NBA Center, with the Size, strength, athleticism, to be a dominate force in the paint. Not to mention that he has the ability to stretch the floor out. If NBA coaches are able to teach him a post game, he has all the tools to become an absolute force.

I'm nearly as high on him as I am Embiid... nearly.

He has an unusually high differential between his height and wing span.  His hands are also bizarrely large.  I was also wondering if that's an indication that he's still growing.  It's not unusual for teenage boys to have disproportionately large feet only to be followed by a growth spurt.

I don't really watch college basketball so my "I hope we get..." ramblings are fueled (usually fairly accurately) by the writeups on NBADraft.net etc. So get out your grains of salt.

I watched the DX video breakdowns of Vonleh and Gordon.

Vonleh scares me. He looks like a homeless man's Chris Bosh -- a good offensive player who isn't a great rebounder and only an OK defender.

Gordon, OTOH, reminded me of a poor man's Shawn Marion + 2 inches. His offensive game looked to be behind Vonleh's but he just looked like he understood what he was doing on the floor more.

Based on what little I saw in those 15 min breakdowns I'd rather have Gordon > Vonley --- but I think I'd also rather Smart than either...

I think the Celts can make their big board this:

Wiggins
Parker
Embiid
Exum
Vonleh
Smart

And then the job is, try to get one of your top 5 guys. Considering Utah has no interest in Smart, and Orlando has lots of interest in Smart, we have two teams right in front of us to talk to. Embiid, Exum or Vonleh has to be considered a good night.

I have Smart over Vonleh & Gordon.

I really need to brush up on Saric more to make a decent conclusion of where to rank him.

Vonleh is a better rebounder than you give him credit for, I think. He pulled down 9 boards in 26 minutes in the Big 10, at age 18 - and has enormous hands and wingspan. The Bosh comparison isn't crazy, but I wouldn't exactly go homeless with it, and Bosh is pretty [dang] good...

Smart's got the "it" factor, he's definitely a competitor. But I just don't know if he can develop that shot enough to become a scoring factor, and I don't think he's a good enough floor general/passer to succeed without it early on (ala Rondo.) He's a bulldog, I'll give him that, and there's value to a guy who just goes out there and competes every night.

I just think Vonleh's potential is so much higher, granted drafting on potential that high in the lottery is always risky, but there's only so many chances you have to draft a guy who could become a legit 7fter. As mentioned above, given his age, and how disproportionate his extremities (wingspan, hands, feet) are to his height, I fully expect 2-3 inches in growth before he reaches 20 years old. He's got all the physical tools you could ask for, it's just a matter of development.

I'm not 100% sold on anyone from this tier becoming a bonafide stud.

Just from watching Smart during the college season, something about his game makes me sense that it might be the "safest" skill set to translate to the pros among these guys.   Now, his ceiling might be lower than some of the other guys in this tier but I also think his floor is pretty high.  I think he can be pretty servicable and believe he would help this Celtics filling a need with creating his own shot.

The sideshow stuff from him last season doesn't worry me that much.

If Saric can defend small forwards at all I would take him at 6.  I would love to see him and Olynyk on offense together.  Defense is another thing but offensively I think they would be fabulous together.

1. Gordon
2. Saric
3. Vonleh
4. McDermott
5. Stauskus
6. McDaniels

Not a fan of either Smart or Randle. Would trade down either of them to grab one of the guys above and a 2nd rounder.

Vonleh scares me. He reminds me a lot of Javale McGee, a million dollar body with a ten cent head.
