I posted this trade idea in another thread, but it was probably the inappropriate thread for it.  What do you guys think of this idea?

The more I think about it, the more a Carmelo trade makes more sense than a Love trade.  We already have a promising power forward in Sully and the Knicks are a disaster.

We trade away the trade exception, Bogans, and Joel Anthony which I think comes to $19 million.  There's a 25% limit on the money of trades, so that would cover Melo.  Plus, we send the #6 and #17 picks, plus the 2016 Brooklyn pick.  The Knicks do the trade because they add 3 good draft picks while only adding Anthony's salary ($3.8m) and Melo is leaving anyway. If Melo is serious about opting out, we may not have to give away so many picks.

We then trade Brandon Bass, the non guaranteed contracts of Chris Johnson and Babb, and the Clippers pick for Larry Sanders. I think that's just enough to cover his salary. Milwaukee does this trade because Henson gives them 90% of what Sanders gives them for a lot less money.  They add a veteran PF and a first round pick while saving a lot of money.

We then re-sign Bayless and Bradley.

Our roster will be:

1.  Rondo, Bayless, Pressey
2.  Bradley, Green, Bayless
3.  Carmelo, Green, Wallace
4.  Sully, Olynyk
5.  Sanders, Olynyk, Fav

I think that team can contend and we still have our mid level exception to add depth.  They'll be paying the luxury tax, but these owners have been willing to pay in the past.

Carmelo will re-sign because he'll make more than he could as a free agent and this team can compete for several years.  We'll still have the Brooklyn 2018 draft pick and 2017 right to switch picks which could help us reload in the future.

I would take Love over Melo to be honest.

A skilled big man that can pass, rebound, and shoot the 3 just as well as anyone is more valuable than a scoring forward that is just as bad as a defender as Love. Melo doesn't provide any huge facets to the game besides offensively.

And I don't think we can grab Sanders unless we add the Nets pick. Bucks aren't going to trade away a talented big man just like that, they would rather keep him than get pennies for a dollar.

I just think Sully is improving (especially if he takes his conditioning seriously) and he'll be a much better player than Jeff Green as soon as next season.  So then you are looking at a 3/4 of Carmelo/ Sully rather than Green/Love.  And I think it will take a lot less to get him rather than Love.

I also think Milwaukee already regrets the Sanders contract because of his off the court issues.  They'll have a young team and a pretty bad team and may not want him around.  I think there may be an opportunity there.  Their power forwards are awful and Bass can provide veteran leadership for just a one year $7m contract saving them $37m in total.  The Celtics will have a veteran team that can handle Sanders' antics.

You can't combine the trade exception with other salary to take back a $19 million player.

And Milwaukee can get more than expiring/non guaranteed contracts for Sanders from 25 other teams in the league. There's no way they accept that deal.

Knuckleballer you're right!! Melo will cost us less than Love but i'm not sure that NY will take Bogans & Anthony. I'll add Jeff Green & Humph just to keep our first rounder (there's a bunch of good players out there, sorry Danny Ainge). This will be the best offer they'll receive, maybe they'll give us Imani Shumpert too & we still have a lot of pics to grab one center. Sanders is skilled as big man but because of his offcourt issue it's no thanks. Let's go for Monroe.

I really think that this point needs to be made more clearly somewhere. There are a lot of trade proposals lately that include the trade exception going out as part of a package for a higher paid player.

Yup, I learned that last night and I've seen about five more trade proposals since making the same mistake I did.
