Buying low and Josh Smith

If we could buy low on Josh Smith like trading Wallace and a filler for him would you do it? Det sheds a year off the Smith deal Rondo gets his buddy and if we add Love we could have Smith come off the bench and lead the Second unit?

I've been all for acquiring Smith at a discount since Dumars made a mistake paying so much for him and then playing him out of position at the 3.

As you've alluded to in your post, you would play him as a backup 4, but that's way too much $$$$ to pay a backup and a huge imbalance having over $30 million invested in one position and even more when Love gets paid in his extension.

Now if we ever acquired Melo or some other huge difference maker and scorer at the 2.3 or 5, Smith at a discount would be worth it.

I'd love to have the Oak Hill gang together and add Asik to that group.

A lineup of Rondo, Green, Melo, Smith and Asik would be a lockdown, smothering team.nWould just need a couple of shooters to balance the team.

Smith here would be fun only from the standpoint of everyone who freaked out about Antoine Walker's shot selection would have their new whipping boy.... Seriously Smith is a guy you just can't win with.  His shot selection sucks and he's got no concept of team basketball from an offensive standpoint.  I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

Josh Smith is not a good "buy low" candidate, since you can expect him to play pretty much as well as he has for the last few years.  Or is your plan to buy low and stay low?

it really, really hurts your motion offense if one of the pieces jacks up a horribly inefficient mid-range jumper every time he touches the ball... the only condition I'd take Smith would be if he signed a contract saying that he must pay the Celtics $1000 for every time he takes a contested jumpshot.

Yeah its impossible to buy low now on Smith because his cap charge is quite high. Even if you gave up very little to get him he costs more than he's worth except to a contender whom he could tip the scales with.

I've long been a big Josh Smith fan and I think him and Kevin Love could make a decent up tempo 4/5 combination but his contract is bad. So I would only make a deal centered around Wallace for Smith because then we are at least dumping a bad contract for another one.

If the cost was Wallace and a future pick, I'd be tempted. Especially if Love was coming here and Sully was going to Minnesota. Everyone is trying to think of a center to pair with Love, but the reality is that established, defensive centers in the prime with a semblance of an offensive game are generally not readily available.

The thought of a Rondo/Bradley/Green/Smith/Love team with Olynyk and Okafor/Asik* (hypothetical acquisition) backing up the frontcourt would be interesting. Four tough perimeter defenders to keep penetrators away and force outside jumpers - let Love clean the glass and start the break. Not perfect, but interesting. They could also go big with Rondo/Green/Smith/Love/Okafor or Asik.

Anyways - back to the point at hand - yes, I would be interested if we were truly buying low. He is still a unique player and maybe Rondo is the one to get in his head and maximize his talent. He is a great defender and a versatile player overall. His shot selection just needs work. Fortunately, he would only be a supplemental player on this hypothetical roster.

Looking at how Detroit's season went, I don't want Josh Smith, with his contract. Although, it'd be fun to watch Rondo and Smith but don't think we can afford him if we go for Love...

I usually just like to read the opinions and postings on this site.  But when I saw this thread it immediately made me have to register and respond.  There is no such thing as buying low enough for Josh Smith.  He is a wonderful athlete that can make highlight reel plays that is very bad at playing the game of professional basketball.  At no price would I want him on the Celtics.  I want him as far away from the Celtics roster as possible.  When he was with Atlanta, he was guaranteed to shoot the Hawks into a lead, then later in the game shoot them to losing the lead and the game.  Scary bad player with no conscience or basketball sense.  Run away.

Gerald Wallace is:

1.) on a contract that ends before Josh Smith's ends
2.) someone who had a better prime than Josh Smith and probably understands the game better
3.) dramatically better in the locker room
4.) a SF, which is a position that is of greater need to the Celtics than PF
5.) already on the team, so we don't have to give anything up to get him
6.) the best possible mentor in terms of playing style to Wiggins, should we get him.  GW in his prime was ridiculous

Josh Smith is just a terrible contract
