I think I agree with the idea that his absolute ceiling is around Gerald Wallace + Shawn Marion, which is, ultimately, a role player -- at least to me.
The ability to guard the best player on a team be it a 2 to a 4 especially against your Lebron's and Durant's would make an in his prime on a good team Gerald Wallace more than a role player in terms of importance. Have him face guarding people and off the ball like Rodman. I hope he'll be willing to do that so the free throws don't become an issue. I'd take a ball handling defensive and physical freak any day of the week at 6 or 7. I think it's irresponsible to take a risk on a 6-4 point guard from Australia over a lockdown, shutdown defender. Defensive will never let you down. No one guy can make this team a contender, not even best case scenario Embiid, who I am hoping for.
You clearly dont know what you are on about because:
1. Exum is a 6'6" PG, not 6'4"
2. Exum is a lockdown defender already at the guard spot, with the potential to be able to defend positions 1-3
3. Exum is a physical freak
Basically everything Gordon gives you, Exum gives you too...except for fancy show-off dunks which I frankly don't care for because 360 dunks do nothing for winning games or championships.
The difference is that Exum can score and distribute too...
You really going to tell me you'd take Gerald Wallace in his Prime over Penny Hawdaway in his Prime? Because those are the guys these two are being projected to become. No, not Marion. He was nearly a 20 PPG scorer in his prime, which Gordon will never be.
I was going off the no shoes combine heights. A bigger, stronger defender who can guard anyone is exactly what I would like. A 20 ppg scoring point guard is not as rare as a versatile, ball handling freak.
I don't care who is more NBA ready year one, this isn't championship time no matter how you slice it. I know what Exum is, he's not going to be the guy you put on Lebron or Durant in a playoff series. I guess I just like hybrids, I'm a Lions fan and I was jacked about getting Eric Ebron when everyone was ticked off as well. We will see.
Penny Hardaway in today's NBA wouldn't be a big deal.
