do you think if lebron james went to a team like bucks, most heat fans will go to bucks?
i think most heat fans are only there because of lebron,
i knew some some solid celtics fans but watching nets games because of pierce and kg

what can you say about this

Good topic!

I became a fan of the Celitcs when they got KG and Ray, mainly because I live in Australia and I only had access to watch NBA games from 2007 onwards when my family got ESPN before League Pass was available.

I would say I am a Celtics fan as still watch the games their games, but the ties with Pierce, KG, Rondo and Doc are probably stronger than the team as they were such a fantastic core group, so this year I'm rooting for the Nets and Clippers (not over Boston though!). I also followed the Phoenix Suns when they had Nash, Amare, Barbosa, Hill and Marion, man they had a really fun to team to watch.

Being a players fan is easier when your team is on the bottom, because when you love the game you need to find reasons to watch the best basketball at the best time of year (the playoffs).

How many Celtics fans would leave or lose most of their interest if Rondo were traded?
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

that`s not the same as the initial question.
I think there will be a significant number of fans that will lose interest but none willl follow RR to his new team.

To answer the OP`s dillema imho you support a team. It`s normal to get attached to a player and once he leaves you`ll keep following his carrier and watch him play but your team can`t be replaced.

a die hard fan can`t change his team

I've been a fan since 1980, and I've lost a lot of favorites over the years.  I've never stopped being a Celtics fan, though.

What bothers me is this notion that because we are big fans of certain players on the team some people think it means we aren't fans of the team.

If I'm not allowed to be a fan of the individual players who play for the team, then, I personally don't see the point.

I guess maybe I've been a bad fan for the past 34 years.

to the bolded: I would, why wouldn't you?

We're all stuck with the Celtics, for one reason or another, but it's not like the guys who make up the roster in any given year have exclusive rights to my fandom.

The night that happened would only be paralleled by the hissy fits thrown on here the night Garnett was acquired.

As someone who rolls his eyes regularly at the people who've bought into the NBA's marketing destruction of this great game with this mindless "individuals first" thing, it'd be a hilarious thing to watch.

One of the many reasons why I detest David Stern.

To answer the quoted question, I am a fan of the uniform. I don't care who wears it, as long as they uphold the tradition of the franchise and the greatness of this game. I don't enjoy watching players who don't buy in to defense, moving the basketball, rebounding, etc.

Which puts me in the apparent minority here.

Don't worry -- I heard the CoachBo edition of Hoosiers is heading to BluRay pretty soon.

Probably very few, probably less than lost interest in the team when KG and PP were traded. The whole "people are fans of Rondo and not the team" tripe falls squarely in the "no matter how ridiculous a comment is, if enough people repeat it others will start to believe it" category.

I'll admit that I root for laundry but always keep a keen interest on certain guys after they leave the Celtics (Pierce, KG, etc...) or guys I loved to follow in college but never played for the Celtics.    I follow those players but don't have much of a rooting interest in their team and certainly don't switch my allegiance.   Although, I have to say I am hoping the Nets & Clippers advance because of their Celtics ties.

Does it matter if somebody is a die-hard fan or just a casual fan?  Does it matter if somebody roots for a particular player instead of a particular team?

Some people just like to watch good basketball, and they'll watch and cheer for the teams playing good basketball.  Teams show no loyalty to the players, fans, or even the cities they play in.  Players show no loyalty to the teams, fans, or city.  Should the fans be held to a different standard?

Fans take a weird kind of pride from watching a team that struggles.  "Ya I watched years of bad basketball rooting for this team, I'm better than the people who just watched the team when they were good."  I don't know if that's really something to brag about.

Some people are fans of a the name on the front of the jersey, some people are fans of the name on the back, and some people are just fans of good basketball.  One's not better or worse than the others.

Now most of us here are die-hard Celtics fan, but we had an active poster who was a big Garnett fan that let it be known he was just here as long as the C's had Garnett.  An active poster, he contributed to this community despite admittedly not being loyal to the Celtics.

ive been a C's fan for a long time now, and while i didn't really follow the nets this season, i am rooting for them in the playoffs. if RR was traded, i'd welcome the new additions - though i guess that's not too surprising.

i think the only time fans are "wrong" (and i use that term lightly) are when they claim they're something they're not. To use your example, they can root for the Heat, but say they're a fan of Lebron. If they claim they're Heat fans but change jerseys the moment Lebron moves, then they're the annoying bandwagon types.

Some people are fans of players, and some are fans of teams. To each his own.

Aside from the fact that Rondo isn't headed out of town on the next bus, your ability to read and comprehend a post hasn't skipped a beat. I can just picture the board, months after Rondo got traded, with me posting on whatever the current topic is while you make frequent snide remarks about how I cancelled my celticsblog account before the trade was even finalized and patting yourself on the back over how clever your comments are.
