How have foreign Centers taken with the first pick of the draft fared in the last 40 years. I give you Hakeem Olajuwon. Anyone else?

  Duncan?

he isn't foreign, he's from the US Virgin Islands!

...but seriously, why would you look at other top foreign bigs instead of just watching Embiid himself?

Olawakandi was foreign (British I think) before playing college ball in the states.

patrick ewing. born in jamaica and played cricket there.  ;D

but i echo the question above, why does the country of origin make any difference in whether the celtics, or anyone, should pick embiid in the draft?

I never once in Yao's entire career ever thought he was the best big man or player in the league at any time.

neither did i, but i also knew he was really, really good and viewed him as being among the top centers in the association. he has one 3 year stretch when he averaged about 23 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks a game, and shot over .850 from the foul line.

not the best center in the league perhaps, but chopped liver he was not.

Greg Oden, Kwame Brown, Pervis Ellison, Joe Barry Carroll, and Kent Benson agree: buy American.

I just would not spend a top pick of the draft on a foreign center. Olowokandi was a big time bust.

What about Olajuwon? Don't understand why being foreign makes him a bigger risk.

career avg = scoring, rebounds, blocks
Kwame Brown = 6.6, 5.5, 0.6 born in charleston, SC, USA
Olowokandi = 8.3, 6.8, 1.4 born in lagos, Nigeria

yes, i can clearly see how "buying american" when drafting a center #1 will assure you a better basketplayer than some "foreign" center.  :(

Hakeem played three years in College here we had a chance to see what Hakeem could do. The reason for concern is you do not have enough data on foreign players.

Embiid is more akin to Michael Olowokandi... We have not seen his work product.

Caveat Emptor.
