http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2014/05/2014_nba_draft_rumors_boston_c.html

This article tales about an interview Mike Gorman gave for 98.5 Th e Sports Hub.

Take it for what it is because who knows how tied in Gorman really is with the front office and direction of the team.

Aside from the typical BPA available, may trade the pick, and  it depends on the lottery talk I took one interesting piece on info from this.

Gorman mentions that the Cs would likely trade their #17 if they land in the lottery. This indicates to me that the Cs are planning on adding a vet from this draft and are not planning on bringing in two rookies. To take this a step further I think it also shows a commitment to building a team with Rondo as the leader and take going into full youth movement.

Interesting interview. Good catch.

With this caveat: You're reading stuff into it about Rondo that isn't there.

Thanks for sharing.

All I really take out of this is if the Cs somehow end up with a top 3 pick, Ainge likely keeps it and if the Celts don't get a top 3 pick, maybe he deals it.

Also, sounds like the Brooklyn pick is available regardless of what happens with the Celts pick.

Can't say I really draw any conclusions about Rondo from reading the article.

I'm confused by the bit about trading the pick if they get in the lottery. Is the thinking that one of the top 3 picks would have such a big impact that they would be close to a playoff team (aka no longer rebuilding)?

I'm curious about what type of player they could get for the 17th pick.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Yeah, not sure about the connection. I would think that if they were to land a top #3 pick, that would mean they'd look more to the future than the short term.

Regardless, I think we all know that Ainge is capable of just about anything on Draft Night.

Also: I think #17 is a nice place to be in this draft. Seems like the tail end of another tier.

There should be someone from the Hood, Payne, Young, Warren set still there. After that, it's looking like lots of guys with (even more) question marks.

You know all the non-guaranteed contracts(Bogans, Babb, Johnson, Pressey) add up to $7.7 million in contracts. Could those, maybe another player, if necessary to match salaries and the 17th pick land:

Omer Asik?
Larry Sanders(poison pill provision makes it tough)?
Nikola Pekovic?
Tyson Chandler?

Actually, for the current year that ends on June 30, aren't Babb's and Johnson's salaries prorated?

I get less than $6 mil using those figures. It's not until the new season that those non-guaranteed salaries approach $7.7 mil, right?

I ask because I believe $7.7 mil would work for Lin or Asik on Draft Night, but under $6 mil won't (luxury tax).

We also have the TPE from Pierce that I believe is worth more than those amounts.

Yes, but again: the luxury tax threshold cannot be exceeded during this current season.

Edit: Barring a substantial slash in current payroll, the TPE cannot be used until after July 1.

I get the Rondo stuff just from the idea of trading the pick. If this team want to go full blown younth movement they keep the pick. If they want to win next year they trade pick or picks for vets and keep rondo.

Is it possible to agree to a deal on draft day but not have it consummated until after July first when we can renounce Humph and whoever else we need to get under the luxury tax?

Absolutely. And I think that's a distinct possibility.

I know it's semantics that a deal couldn't be finalized on Draft Night. Given the GMs in question, I have no doubt that a relatively simple deal could be worked out between Morey and Ainge.

One thing about an Asik deal that involves the TPE: would Houston really want to take back a guaranteed contract of a mid-1st pick? I suppose it's likely they'd simply reroute that player's rights on in another deal.

I didn't think pro rated salary amounts were used when figuring matching salary for teams over the cap. If the players were signed to min contracts then the yearly min salary was used.

Even so, its a good pick up on your part as the numbers I used were numbers for post July 1st and not for what they would be during the draft so either way the figure the numbers, its still not that high. Tops would be around $6.7 million. Pro rated more like $6 million like you said.

TP.

It is not unusual for teams to agree to a deal in June but not make it official until after the July moratorium.  As long as you are only involving picks, draft rights, and players under contract for next season and not trying to make a sign-and-trade part of the deal, it should be possible.
