I've always admired Doc as a person. He struck me as a good man, willing to take stands on serious issues, and a great leader of men (I found some of his substitution strategies maddening, etc., but its hard to deny that our guys would run through walls for him when he was here). However, I'm seriously disappointed in his embracing Sterling's wife in this whole thing (and, quite frankly, the entire NBA for focusing on Sterling's words, and not his horribly discriminatory actions re: housing policy). Bomani Jones had a 10 minute tirade on this last week that was awesome. Anyway, yeah, I really am disappointed that Doc has made Shelly Sterling, the woman who faked being a health inspector to get ethnicities of tenants so they could impose their racial quotas in the apartments (all illegal) (http://www.thenation.com/blog/179673/no-sympathy-shelly-sterling), a "victim" i this mess. If the NBA forces Sterling to sell the team (something I still think is going to be challenging), I sure as heck hope his wife has nothing to do with the franchise, either. Racist words are ugly and bad. Racist actions that actually harm minorities by denying them needed housing is exponentially worse. The latter is why Sterling should have been kicked to the curb years ago (yet another huge Stern failure), and why his wife should not be seen as a heroine here. Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm just disgusted by this whole thing, and disappointed that Doc went along w/ the mainstream story that only focused on Sterling's words.

Not going to lie -- I was shocked when this wasn't an Ogaju thread.

From the article:

Quote
It?s a tough one for Shelly, really. She didn?t do anything wrong. You have compassion for her. I kept hearing about the girlfriend, and Shelly?s the wife. You know what I mean? I talked to her today, and she?s been through as much as anyone as well. She asked if she could come, which I thought was a very nice gesture, and she just wanted the players to know that she loved them, and she told me to tell them. I thought, why not?

He sounds so despicable in that quote.

I guess. It's pretty clear that he's referencing the specific incident that lead to Sterling's dismissal, rather than her entire history.

I thought this would be about his general abilities as a coach.  i'm very pleased with Doc that he left and we have an unprotected pick from the Clips for our troubles.

Btw, I apologize for starting up another thread on this topic. I'm just very frustrated at the lack of coverage of  (and the lack of coverage on the NBA's not doing anything about it) Sterling's discriminatory actions that caused harm to minorities re: housing. There are serious and dangerous consequences of denying vulnerable folks access to housing because of racism, which is precisely what Sterling did.

I was being sarcastic.  I understand that she's probably no saint herself, but I thought Doc's quote showed kindness and sympathy for a woman who surely could use some.

My B -- my sarcasm meter won't recharge until I take a break for lunch.

Unless I have missed it.... How come nobody is talking about how Sterling is in this debacle with a "girlfriend" but his "wife" is still a) going to games and b) still his wife?

Not all marriages are exclusive, this wasn't Sterlings first Mistress. His wife clearly has at the very least decided to tolerate his affairs.
