Sources said Erman, who was coach Mark Jackson's second assistant, would record coaches' meetings, meetings between the coaches and players, and informal discussions among coaches that took place in the team's coaches room -- all without the participants' knowledge.

"He was taping everything," one source said. "Taping pregame speeches wouldn't have been that bad, but he was taping guys just sitting around talking in the coaches' office."

Sometimes Erman would be present during the tapings. Other times, he would leave the room and leave his phone behind to record conversations the other coaches were having.

It is unclear what Erman did with the recordings. The sources weren't sure if he shared them with the club's owners or front office executives.

Erman's dismissal was the second bizarre event involving Jackson's staff in less than two weeks' time. On March 25, management demoted first-year assistant Brian Scalabrine to the club's D-League affiliate in Santa Cruz.

Sources say the move was made because Scalabrine exhibited a consistent pattern of disrespect toward Jackson and the other coaches. Mainly, he ignored and refused to speak with the other basketball coaches. At one point, Scalabrine went five weeks without speaking to Jackson, one source said.

Scalabrine even avoided the coaches on the team plane, sitting in a separate section, according to one source.

That's just weird stuff.  The situation with Scal is a little disappointing; it sounds like it wasn't handled very professionally.  The way this is being spun, it makes me worry about him landing on his feet with another coaching gig.

Scal could always be an announcer.

We don't seem to have a permanent arrangement yet for away games.

The question is who is the "sources" of course, especially with regards to Scalabrine. Disrespect is a delightfully vague reason to demote someone given the volatile nature of NBA coaching. I have no doubt Jackson would make up something to make himself look better if necessary.

If that article is accurate, why wasn't he just fired? I'm guessing the "disrespect" was at the very least not one sided given how petty and insecure Mark Jackson is as a coach.

The Erman thing is more clear cut, though you wonder what exactly was going on that led him to record things. He clearly had to have some sort of intended audience for all the eavesdropping.

Yep, that's what I assume as well.

This sounds like a take-down job after the fact, to me.

Yeah, sounds a bit like "sources" planting information to paint Mark in a better light. In Woj's article, he said Erman recorded one conversation and there was a belief on his part that Jackson and some other coaches were attempting to undermine his authority with the players.  Regarding Scalabrine, there were some ESPN talking heads that claimed GS management was very high on Scal and Mark felt threatened - like they were grooming his replacement and that was the root of their issues.

I don't know what side his more reliable sources, but Jackson seems to be a common denominator and that's hard to ignore.

Exactly my thoughts.  Does that sound like Scal from anything else we've heard or seen from him?

Personally I don't think much about Jackson as a coach and it seems like he can't lead as well.  I would love to hear a lot more information at the least before I would judge Scal.

Jackson always seemed like a blowhard as an announcer. He would throw in disrespectful digs at Jeff Van Gundy - particularly when Van Gundy sounded smarter than him; I even heard him take a dig at Mike Breen one time.

This is all conjecture of course - but he seems like the kind of guy who has an ego. Like a 50 year old guy who never learned that it is okay if someone gets the better of you because life is going to get the better of everyone.

Obviously, from his announcing, I have grown to dislike him. I would not be disappointed if he disappeared. Very annoying personality.

"THAT SHOULD BE AGAINST THE LAW, SON!"

Still can't believe he actually said that (on a Ty Lawson play call).  I mean I can believe it really... but can't.  You know what I mean.

Yeah, Scal not talking to and avoiding people?! That's the guy who set up an impromptu press conference for himself when he was with the Celtics. He's also always looked fairly personable and amicable in public appearance.

Of course, he also had a tendency to speak his mind, and I can't imagine this sitting well with someone like Marc Jackson.

More on the GSW situation toward the bottom.  Looks like Jackson's into playing Mickey Mouse corporate games.

"The Warriors in the last six weeks demoted one assistant and fired another, and ESPN.com?s Chris Broussard today reported that the team fired Darren Erman after learning Erman had recorded at least one coaches? meeting. Multiple league sources confirmed the gist of Broussard?s report, and that Erman was concerned Mark Jackson and other coaches loyal to Jackson were insulting Erman to other players behind Erman?s back.

The team had no choice but to fire Erman. However, the front office is fond of Erman and was upset at having to let him go, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The Erman firing and demotion of Brian Scalabrine have raised tensions throughout the Warriors? organization.

Jackson made a show of firing Scalabrine in front of players and other coaches, but he had no real grounds, and the front office made Jackson find a compromise, per a source familiar with the matter: demoting Scalabrine to the D-League. In addition, Jackson has asked that Jerry West, a high-level adviser in Golden State, not attend most practices and team activities, sources say.

The tension with Erman got weird. Midseason, the team moved Erman?s parking spot to a less convenient place, likely at the behest of Jackson or one of Jackson?s allies on the staff, per multiple sources familiar with the matter. They began changing his duties in strange ways.

The atmosphere has bordered on poisonous, though to the credit of Jackson, his staff, and his players, it has not spilled onto the court. ...."

I was surprised he was ever hired as a head coach to begin with. He always came across as ignorant and full of himself. as a commentator.
