Rondo warned by the league for flop

*sigh* KG, Pierce and Doc leave and this is what our team becomes. The captain himself flopping. I guess KG, Pierce and Doc Rivers kept the team quality under control.

In fairness, the Celts did plenty of flopping during the Big Three era, too.  BBD flopped constantly, and Pierce is one of the bigger floppers (especially on the offensive end*) in the league.

* I don't see a huge difference between a guy who sells a call on defense, versus a guy who attempts to sell a defensive foul when he's on offense.

What bothered me is when he took the dive. It was on the Teague drive, which ultimately led to the first of the Korver back to back 3's.

Not a good sequence for Rondo either as the next defensive play was the second Korver 3.

Then Korver inexcusably got free in transition. Remember, this was after a made basket, so Boston has no excuse for not being back and set. Korver, who had left his man to put up a hand on Sullinger's 3-pointer, was the first Hawk down the floor and noticed that Rondo was calling out assignments with his back to him. Korver darted from the right side of the floor to the left corner, where he staked out until Jeff Teague delivered a pass from a few steps inside half court. Am I the only one who thinks that wasn't a warning or fine worthy flop?  They obviously collide legs/knees (possibly thighs).  Of course Rondo falls straight back (inconsistent with the contact) to sell it but if that is worth a warning then almost every player in the league should have at least one.

as long as rondo doesnt make it a habit, it doesnt matter. its a one time thing.

It was an unabashed flop and certainly deserving of a warning.  Everyone who's done an egregiously-obvious flop like that this season has been warned.

It seems like a good rule of thumb for flop fines/warnings is that inventing contact that didn't occur gets penalized and exaggerating contact that did occur doesn't.  I'm sure there are gray area cases but that's been a pretty consistent pattern as far as I've seen. 

Rondo doesn't get hit by Teague but hits the deck anyway, whereas LeBron's selling that hard but Monroe's arm is actually making (light) contact with his head.

The only reason the league stepped in was because the blog-sphere went crazy over it today and gave it attention..they almost had to. Just like the one with Lebron earlier this year that started the little Lebroning craze that the kids were doing in school (just falling out in the middle of the hall without being touched..lol). Trust they wouldn't have given Lebron that warning if it wasn't all over the internet.

I studied the video and I do not agree with the warning because Rondo's was not an obvious flop. He made a basketball play just like Mahorn's 'chair pulling' moves in the post. Rondo did not flail his arms in an obvious attempt to get a call. The refs should earn their keep and not call non fouls, but the players should not be required to stand there and get injured because they are going to be accused of flopping.

There are two reasonable explanations for Rondo on that play.

1. He was falling away because his stance had already disrupted Teague's advance to the basket. Not necessarily a flop. OR

2. He stepped in to take the charge but thought better about it either because of the tank or because he is not yet sure about his knee.

I just did not see the overly dramatic act of flopping and looking to the ref for a call.

Players should not be fined for protecting their bodies or making smart basketball plays.
