I know that BR isn't the most reliable, but the story does quote the Herald's Mark Murphy:

Quote
According to the Boston Herald's Mark Murphy, the free-agent-to-be's agent has held preliminary contract talks with the Celtics.

"Humphries has said he would like to return—a surprise, considering he will be courted by playoff teams when his contract expires on June 30," writes Murphy. "Agent Arn Tellum has held preliminary talks with Celtics president Danny Ainge, understanding that the team can’t predict its direction right now."
There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.'

You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

Returning to Boston might be the best chance for Humphries to make more than the MLE.  Negotiating such a deal would be good leverage to get a playoff team to cough up the full MLE if they want him.  Ainge should be prepared for the possibility that he might end up trading Jared Sullinger as part of a package for a star and there could be some minutes available for a player such as Humphries.

There's no harm in talking about it and advantages for both sides.

I'm surprised that Murphy finds it a surprise that Humphries wants to come back.  My guess is that most free agents go to whatever team pays them the most money.

I'm guessing he wants find a team to stay after spending several years bouncing from team to team.

I'm guessing you resign him in a world where Sullinger is gone for Kevin Love, and we draft someone like Wiggins.

Rondo
Wiggins / Bradley
Green
Love
Humphries / Bass / Faverani

He won't be back.  Most Danny will offer him is 5 million a year. That is a big paycut for a guy that made 12.  He is looking for 8 a year imo and danny can't commit that money to a bench player right now

Any smart player who's a free agent will of course say he wants to stay on his current team.  The C's have Bird rights, and can sign him to more than most teams.  Offending them now would be stupid.

My guess is Ainge tells him they'd be happy to help facilitate a sign-and-trade this offseason.  I like OKC, since they have a trade exception due to Kevin Martin.  I think Hump could get $6 million from them, and we could get a small present.

Bass wasn't exactly the point of my post, or this thread. He's on our roster until we deal him, and if we acquire Love by moving Sullinger we're gonna need help at the 5, so re-signing Humphries makes sense. Bass would be the guy with the next most experience playing center on the roster.

IMO the next move would be a rim-protecting center, but Humphries on a reasonable deal as the 3rd or 4th big after that happens is not a bad place to be. So if you want to take the next step, it might be:

Rondo
Wiggins / Bradley
Green / Pierce
Love / Olynyk
CENTER / Humphries / Olynyk

That could be a contender, if you see Wiggins as All-Star caliber and CENTER as rim protector.

Humphries is under contract with the Celtics until he becomes a free agent. Until then, he can't talk to any other team about a contract for next year. So, why wouldn't Humphries' agent talk to the Celtics now? Might as well see what the current team is going to offer as long as you are limited to talking to only them.

I would file this under, "Move along. Nothing interesting to see here." type news.

They're just laying some groundwork in case the Celtics make moves so that Humphries could be the starter next season.

If we make moves where Hump is are starting PF, something got screwed up.  means Sully, if not Sully and KO, were traded for someone other than a better PF.  There's no centers on the known market I'd trade Sully for and I certainly wouldn't trade sully for a smaller player (yes, there are exceptions but players like Bron and Harden aren't on the market)
