Stevens is getting a ton of respect here, 7 coaches behind Stevens have their squads in the playoffs. The Celtics are 26th in the standings but the coach is #11, and he's a rookie coach... at face value this just seems strange to me, where Hornacek at #7 makes sense.

Is Brad's coaching at Butler still to fresh in people's mind to objectively vote on his NBA coaching ability, or does he actually deserve to be placed ahead of many other veteran NBA coaches and coaches who are in the playoffs? Did Brad coach up enough players this year to justify this?

Either way, it's great to see Danny's pick to replace the impossible to replace Doc, getting such praise by the NBA community.

I don't think this is an entirely accurate statement.

Making the playoffs is a result of many more factors than just the coach, mainly, the quality of the players on the roster.  Red himself couldn't have guided this team to the playoffs.  That doesn't mean every coach who did make the playoffs is a better coach, it just mean the roster didn't have enough talent.

As for Stevens' ranking on this list, I'd be interested to know what criteria was used to arrive at the results.  Not saying I disagree with where he was ranked, but I'd be interested to know why he was ranked where he was.  I don't really have any particularly strong feelings on his overall abilities as an NBA coach at this time.  Too early in the game, and he wasn't exactly given much to work with this season.

Not bad for a guy who very well could have the 4th worst team in the NBA when all is said & done.

The offense has been extremely tough to watch this year.  I don't know how much of that is on Stevens or on the players (its a crap roster offensively, if you ask me).   I have been encouraged by the fact that this team, despite being pretty awful, has hung in most games and seems to play with effort night & night out.  I haven't really sensed them checked out.

I'm really interested to see how Stevens does once he has a talented roster around him.  This roster is pretty atrocious.  Auerbach & Jackson wouldn't have done wonders with it, either.

Seeing Thibs ahead of Doc validates what we've all known for some time.

True, Thibs is probably a better coach at this point, but Doc is still doing a pretty good job in LA. Both Blake and DeAndre have shown a good amount of improvement this season compared to last.

how does casey in toronto get 12th behind stevens ? i think he's done a great job in toronto. obviously you need good players to win but you also need a good strong personality to keep the players focused and united. mchale should be ahead of him as well as wittman in washington. Brad really hasnt shown me anything that impressive this year. spoelstra is way too high as well but thats just my bias speaking

How Rick Carlisle doesn't crack the top 5 is beyond me. I'd put him at 2 behind Pop. Also, Doc is too high.

What if the Knicks (currently 9th in the East) sneak into the playoffs?

For the hand he's been dealt, he's done incredibly well.  Most of the games we lost, we were very competitive in and it's due to coaching

Stevens has kept a badly constructed team playing, usually, with good effort through a season of loss after loss after loss.  On the other hand, this team had been in a bunch of games where they were competitive and then just imploded.  This team hasn't gotten blown out a lot but they've fumbled away chances to win too many times to not put some of it on the coach.

I think

1. Pops
2. Thibs
3. Doc
4. Vogel
5. Carlisle

is extremely accurate, though 2-5 could be argued any way..  Good thing this wasn't a fan vote or Spoelstra would have gone even higher.

Other than Monty Williams I don't see anyone that's really too low.  JKidd is obviously too high.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

The important thing to notice here is that this vote wasn't "best coach in a vacuum," it was 'coach that has done the best with what he's got'.

I think CBS is fairly placed.
