Less playoff games?

What are your thoughts on having less playoff games? Watching the NCAA tournament right now got me thinking that a more similar format would be beneficial to the NBA.


Having less games will make every game matter. Say best of 3 games (instead of 7) for each series? Underdogs would have a greater chance of winning and games would be more exciting. Part of the monotony of the NBA comes from teams that win back-to-back-to-back-etc championships. It might help fix some of the tanking issue, as fringe playoff teams would make an extra push to get in - anything is possible in a 3 game series.

On the other side, there's something special about a 7 game series. An entire rivalry can be created over those games. Also, owners would probably never go for it - less playoff games means less moolah.

It'll never happen because of the almight $ but I felt they should've left the 1st round a 5 game series.

Playoffs are also ridiculously drawn out (like 2 months).  Again, that's a money grab with TV so that's not going anywhere, either.

I like the seven game format but hate that there is 2 or three days in between games now sometimes. For me personally the length of playoff games is fine, its the length and timeline to which they play them that bugs me the most.

Too much $ for the NBA to pass up to cut playoff games but I wouldn't mind the first couple of rounds being just 5 games
