The Boston Celtics will sign Chris Babb to a multi-year contract, a league source tells Yahoo Sports. His second 10-day deal ends today.

Same situation as Chris Johnson.  I'm sure it'll be totally non-guaranteed.

I'm kind of surprised these D-Leaguers go for the multi-year non-guaranteed deals.

You'd think they'd prefer to go year to year in case they get some extended playing time and break out.

It's probably due to a lack of leverage.  If Babb won't take a fully non-guaranteed deal, the Celts will find somebody who will.

Chris Babb, on the other hand, has not impressed me that much and he hasnt even played in the last four games. I'm sure that we could find a better guy somewhere else.. oh well.

Here's the case for Babb: He's been an excellent teammate and has made a positive impact when he's been given the chance to be on the floor. Boston's defensive rating (points allowed per 100 possessions) is a mere 87.4 with Babb in the game (or 16 ½ points below the team's season average, albeit in an obviously super small sample). He's been thrust into some tough matchups, including being sent out to guard Indiana's Paul George after checking in for his NBA debut, but he has held his own in large part because of his tenacity.

Also Brad Stevens has only spoken praise about him in SL, and how hes been doing mentally as of late.

“He’s a perfect fit for what we need,” the coach said. “He’s not going to play 38 minutes a game, (but) he’s going to come in, get open shots, hopefully knock those open shots down, play off of other people and then be a feisty defender for us. And he really is an outstanding defender for a young guy. And I credit him and, certainly, the coaching he’s received in college and now. But he’s an outstanding defender as a team player and an individual.”

Also... He is a younger 3 point shooting glue kind of guy that hustles hard, and has done well rebounding in D-League. Those are the kind of guys you want when re-building, young and extremely cheap 3 D type of guys.

And he can be used as a small piece of salary balast for a trade.

Because those future unguaranteed years make him a trade asset, like a mini-Bogans.  DJ White's contract was an important part in maximizing the size of the trade exception that the Celtics could get from the Nets trade.

Babb is pretty familiar with the team and the system at this point.  He's a known quantity.

On top of that, I'm sure he comes dirt cheap, and it's probably entirely non-guaranteed.  It's about the most favorable contract a team could have with a player.  No downside to it.
