An interesting thing to consider regarding the retirement of numbers: Historically, guys who got their numbers retired with the Celtics were usually Celtics lifers. Now, however, in the days of uber free agency and players—even great ones—often changing teams, how is this going to work? Should Shaq have his number retired in Phoenix and Orlando and Cleveland?

Ray, if he retired today, will have spent less than 1/3 of his career with Boston (5 of 18 seasons); I don't see how Boston could retire such a player's number, unless that player was instrumental in multiple championships. And would Seattle and/or Milwaukee also retire his number? What about Miami? I mean, Boston, unlike other teams, doesn't usually hand out these things so cavalierly (e.g. Miami with Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning).

Robert Parish wasn't a Celtics lifer, but most people forget or don't realize he ever played for Golden State, Charlotte, and Chicago, because he spent most of his career and Boston and won three titles here. Ray, on the other hand ... we can't even make a good guess on what uniform he'll wear in the Hall of Fame.

Maybe the title of the post should be "30% and dropping".

If he had went ANYWHERE but Miami or LA .....still left same circumstance I'd say retire his number.

He just screwed the Boston fans going where he did.  No respect for the people that supported him.

He shouldn't have his Jersey retired. And neither should KG. Pierce should be the only player in the last 20 years that gets his jersey retired.

Exactly, and that lack of respect wasn't just done to the fans but also to his buds, PP and KG .

Judas was so p---ed at Ainge and a Doc and Rondo and he wanted to screw them so bad by giving them the big middle finger that he didn't care who was hurt in the process (the fans and KG and PP).

Very classy, Judas. There's a saying in "The Godfather": "Honorable men go with honorable men". You're right where you belong, Judas, with the colluders and idiots  and egos in South Beach. There's a reason they call them the cHeat.

Hope you enjoyed the boos and jeers you got here Wednesday. You deserved them.

Besides Yes and No, there should have been a No Effing Way option.  Would have been a landslide winner.

I think it is totally fine to hate on Ray for leaving the Celts for our rival while we were still trying to contend, but at some point, you even have to move on from that seeing how things have played out for the Celts since..........But to deny what Ray did for us while he was here, that's just sour grapes.

Benedict Arnold did great things for the American Revolution, too, until he decided to turn West Point over to the British.

Were his original good deeds undone? No, of course not, but history doesn't look too kindly on traitors. Leave your friends (PP and KG who nixed the Mayo deal to keep him) to join the enemy? Ask KG how he feels about his "buddy" Ray.
Couldn't agree more, csfansince60s.
