Asik and Lin would be the main salary components, but I would have to think Parsons and a couple of picks would also be in play.  Be interested to see if the Knicks do acknowledge they would sign and trade Anthony, what teams would become involved that otherwise might not be.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Is there any way that the Rockets can trade away enough salary to just sign him outright?

Hard to do as you have to eat salary back anyways.  A sign and trade makes more sense.

If the rockets and knicks dont get past the 2nd round of the playoffs and jackson does not want melo as the face of the team moving fwd this trade makes sense.

The trade that could happen

To rockets: melo(singed), stoudermire
To nyk: parsons(signed), asik, lin, t jones, 2014 and 2016 1sts

Interesting.

Melo at PF next to Dwight would be absolutely terrifying.

I just don't think the Knicks will trade Melo unless he says he is gone anyway so they should sign and trade to get something for him. So I don't see Rockets giving up that much to get a free agent that wants to sign there anyway.

I think if they go after Melo they will try to trade Asik and Lin for cap space then use it to sign Melo outright. That way they would have a chance to sign Parsons and exceed the soft cap. I believe since Parsons qualifying offer is so low they could wait to sign him until after Melo and he wouldn't burden them cap wise.

This would be where the Celtics' $10 million exception could come in handy.

Parsons isn't a free agent this summer (the rockets have a team option for the league minimum, so they're picking up that option).  So Parsons can go to the Knocks, sure, but his salary won't match much in return.  No way for them to match salaries with Stoudamire.

Only if he is willing to leave a lot on the table.  Dumping Asik and Lin, taking no salary back, and getting rid of their unguaranteed contracts will leave them with $13-$15 million in cap room, depending where the final cap number is.  Melo is eligible for roughly $22.5 mil next year if he signs for the max.

If things work out , then maybe we can get Asik without giving up any real assets besides our trade exception. I don't think there are many other teams that can provide the Rockets with some easy cap relief to get Melo.

Speculation that Chicago will be interested as well. They'll be in the same boat as Houston, needing to dump salary to clear up cap space.

Hopefully, Ainge can leverage the power of that TPE to its maximum during the first week of free agent frenzy this summer.

If Carmelo leaving the Knicks helps us get either Asik or Taj Gibson for nothing then Melo could end up really helping the C's. I think if you give us Wiggins/Parker or Embiid, a solid pick in the 16-20 range and one of those guys then this team is much improved.

Well, I doubt that the TPE alone is going to be able to land a decent piece. There will be other teams, particularly rebuilding ones, that could leverage cap space the same way that Ainge could leverage the TPE. Philly, Utah, and Orlando all should have appreciable amounts of cap space, just to name a few. Phoenix and Dallas as well.

Ainge may need to "outbid" one of these other teams, which is where that stockpile of future 1st rounders could come in handy.

I think it even goes beyond this.  The C's could facilitate a three-way trade to make this happen, if they can find a third team to take Lin (who I don't see the C's taking on).  Lets say, for example that Brooklyn likes Lin.  You can work out a three way deal.

Boston gets Asik, Marcus Thornton (expiring)
Brooklyn gets Lin
Houston gets Bogans, Pressey, Johnson (all could be cut immediately and come off the books)

Boston gets Asik, and a solid SG in Thornton, who could also be valuable to include in a bigger deal as an expiring contract.

It's not possible if Carmelo Anthony wants more than $20 million/year.  He'd have to take significantly less.
