Free-agent forward Caron Butler intends to sign with the Oklahoma City Thunder after he clears waivers Saturday, sources told ESPN.com.

Butler reached a buyout agreement with the Milwaukee Bucks and was waived on Thursday. The Heat also were interested in acquiring Butler, who played his first two NBA seasons with Miami and remains close with Heat star Dwyane Wade.

The Thunder might be able to give Butler more playing time as a backup to Kevin Durant. Oklahoma City, which is without center Kendrick Perkins for up to six weeks, could use more smaller lineups the rest of the season, which may open up chances for Butler.

The 34-year-old Butler averaged 11.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in 34 games for the Bucks. He has battled a high ankle sprain that's cost him time recently and is shooting a career-low 39 percent. But he scored 17 or more points four times in his past 10 games.

Butler wasn't having a particularly strong season, but this is a solid pickup for the Thunder.  Add a tough veteran with playoff experience and finally have a legit backup to Durant.  The Heat were apparently interested as well.

Good. I just didn't want him going to Miami.

Also leads me to a question - of the two small forwards recently bought out and resigned to another team, who would you rather have, Granger or Butler?

I'd go with Butler.  Granger looks cooked.

Very good signing for OKC. They needed a backup SF and Caron Butler is a really good one.

Definitely take Caron over Granger. Caron is still a a good rotation caliber player in the NBA. Granger hasn't helped his team in two years and looks way off from being able to help his new team in the near future.
