An anonymous scout told Chris Broussard (already lol'ing at this point):

Quote
"Three years ago, I was the only scout saying Rondo is overrated, and I was crucified for it. I was saying he was awful. I think he's a selfish player. He's only going to pass it to you if he thinks he can get an assist. I've seen him come out for pregame warm-ups with his shoes untied, shooting lefty foul shots. For him to come out for a game with that attitude makes me question his work ethic. I've never liked his game.

"If you play with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen at close to their peak, they're going to raise everyone's game. Defensively, Rondo's a bit of a gambler, and I don't think his defense is all that. If I was starting a team and had my choice of any point guard, he would be 40th. I mean it. I'd take some backups before him."

Obviously, this guy's overall point is ridiculous. Rondo is at worst a top ten point guard in this league, and in my opinion he's a top five point guard when healthy. But is there any truth to this "troll-scout" and his remarks?

Of course it's ridiculous to criticize Rondo for looking to make the pass that has the best chance at being converted into a shot. But does Rondo over-analyze his passes sometimes? I think so. Sometimes when I'm watching the Cs I'm blown away about the lack of ball movement with Rondo at the floor. Certainly he was at fault for the team's poor ball movement early on last season; coincidentally, when he went down due his ACL injury, I think the team's pace and ball movement really picked up. Maybe I'm relying far too much on my eyes; if I am, let me know. IMO Rondo is still a great player, but I also feel that he's a ball-dominant point guard (no snide comments about that, I obviously mean more ball-dominant than other guards I've watched) and a player who fits better on a half-court team than a run-n-gun team.

When you say he'd be your 40th pick for a PG, you've lost any shred of credibility.

There's some truth to it.

We already had a thread on this, I think?
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

so i guess kobe is overraed too. when did we see kobe pass the ball in his prime.

and how can you be a selfish passer....

ball handling and passing is rondos game theres no one on the court you rather see have the ball then rondo thats just a weakness that come with something he does so valuable. he wont change his game.

rondo just needs to grow as a leader and with help he could pick his spots better

That's not what he's saying at all. He's saying that if your best basketball quality is distributing, you better run a team that moves the ball well and efficiently.

Kobe was a scorer, and a great one at that. His game was not passing, so your first comment isn't that relevant to the scout's assessment of Rondo.

I think there is some truth to it. Being able to send the ball to Ray Allen for a corner three anytime makes a point guard look good. He was gunning for assists last year before the injury.

And, although he is often successful, he does gamble on defense (although that is a product of the overload/help system he had behind him under Rivers, so I'm not sure if that's all his fault).

He is a weak outside scorer, and not a good enough free throw shooter for his position.

With all that said, I think the league's top guards are:

CP3
Wall
Rondo
Lowry
Westbrook (when healthy)
Bledsoe (when healthy)
Rose (when healthy)
Irving (on offense)
Dragic (on offense)
Damian Lillard (on offense)

As some here do when they claim Rondo walks on water.

With that said, he's closer to splitting the Red Sea than he is the 40th best point guard in this league.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

I think there is a big difference between Rondo having to carve out his game when playing next to 3 future hall of famers than now being the leader of this team. Assists were his craft and now his game has to be tweaked to fit here. Don't care how Rondo was then, just care about how he is now for the good of this team.

He definitely goes stat hunting at times. He'll go after those triple doubles for example.

If he's close to 10 rebounds he'd dig down for a defensive rebounding instead of boxing out his man or leaking in transition. (well he does this a lot no matter the game but its more frequent when he's close to a triple-double)

He'll also pass on layups to throw a pass to a big man for a dunk at times. This happens in transition even when there is a defender in the area sometimes and it has cost the C's a bucket or a point (foul then FTAs are split).

But overall, the scouts view is severely warped. Rondo is far from a ball-stopper and far from the "40th" PG.

An encouraging report for potential talent-evaluators who want to get into the business.

Behold: the guy you're competing against.

Yes, sounds like the same "unnamed scout" source Broussard cited for the same type of article about Kyrie Irving.

What kind of credible NBA scout would be ripping NBA players to Chris Broussard?

An unnamed Western Conference scout offered Kyrie Irving as a player he has deemed to be overrated by the NBA community.

"I think Kyrie is overrated because he's the anointed one; he was the first pick in the draft, and his team doesn't win," said the scout.

"I think Kyrie is Stephon Marbury. Marbury was a great talent, too, but he never won. Steph was a pain in the butt, and Kyrie's not like that. He's not malicious. He's smart, he's more polished than Marbury. He's got the commercials and he's an engaging personality, but engaging only takes you so far. I really think he's just a scorer, and that's what Steph was. Kyrie can do whatever he wants to. He's got the ball on a string, he can get in the lane whenever he wants, but so far, he's chosen just to be a scorer rather than getting other guys involved. Guys say he doesn't trust his teammates, but you're talking about Luol Deng and Tristan Thompson. Those are good players. I'm just not buying into Kyrie."

Marbury was one of the best point guards in the NBA before his career dropped off under Larry Brown with the New York Knicks.

It's just incredible to me that Rondo is perhaps the most scrutinized PG in the game...and has been for a few years, now.

He's also been maybe the best player on the Boston Celtics team the last couple of years, too.

I wonder if the scout in question took into account the 09-10 playoffs - where Rondo seemed to first make his BIG splash. The CLE series was just INCREDIBLE.

Did the scout see that series? Did the scout see his other great games?

Rondo certainly has his warts, but ALL great players do.

But again - it's just incredible to me that the Ax grinders love Rondo...maybe if he smiled more...kissed babies....maybe if he did those things he'd be more likeable....

Wow.
