There is a remote possibility that both of these teams miss the playoffs this season.

The Cavs and the pistons are pushing hard for playoff spots. The Hawks and Nets right now are the 7th and 8th seeds.

The Hawks look like they have lost some confidence, and the loss of horford has really caught up with them.

What's interesting though is that if they both miss the playoffs. Our pick may end up be as high as #10. Because Minesota, Memphis, New Orleans and Denver have very good records, but can't crack into the top 8 of the western conference.

Here's a link to the standings, if you want to verify:

http://espn.go.com/nba/standings

The chances are slim that things go down like this. But it's something to keep an eye on. I never expected this pick to be so valuable.

Two lottery picks to begin a rebuild would go a long way, if we play our cards right.

Right now it gives us the 16th pick in the draft. Very nice. Atlanta is playing poor ball. They'll miss the playoffs. I think the nets get in. I just hope it's as low a seed as possible. Assuming they make it, I really want to see Brooklyn and Miami in round 1.

Yeah, i'm perfectly satisfied with where the selection is now. Coming into the season, it was supposed to be a lock that  we'd be picking in the twenties.

I just wanted to point out though, that if somehow the nets slip up and miss the playoffs. We wouldn't fall to #14, the pick would tumble immediately to the 10-11 range. Which would be remarkable.

This would be awesome. Of course it assumes the Hawks also stay out of the play-offs. fingers crossed.

This made me curious about that dream scenario.

It would require both Detroit and Cleveland to pass *both* BKN and ATL.

As an example, suppose both BKN finishes 39-42, which is conservative given their recent pace. (If ATL is worse it doesn't matter what their record is, we don't get that pick).

Cleveland would need to go 18-8 or better and Detroit would need to go 17-9 or better.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that unless BKN experiences a rash of injuries, it's not gonna happen.

Right now it gives us the 13th pick by my calculations.  Atlanta has the 17th worst record in the league, the Nets have the 18th worst.

All playoff teams are out of the lottery and pick after every lottery team. So even though MEM and MIN have better records, they are in the lottery and pick before BKN and ATL.

And, we get the worse of the two picks.

Oh, that's not cool.  I was pretty excited with the way things worked out the last couple of days.

This is an awesome link! Thanks and TP.

These last two losses were vital to the tank based on those percentages. Big difference between fourth worst record and fifth.

They were double boost against tanking rivals.....games that mean the most to tank.

Man .....a loss to Utah tomorrow  would be massive stroke of luck........and a win for Orlando in its next two games would be sweet.  Sweet sweet ..... ;D

Let us give tanks ."......amen"

4th-5th are also worlds better than 6th-7th because finishing 4-5 gives us a great chance at a top 5 pick (83% if we're 4th), but finishing 6th-7th gives us much much lower chances (22% chance of top 5 if we're in the 7th slot).

It's the way the lottery is set up...the 6th-7th lottery slots have a 0% chance of getting the 4th or 5th picks.

Utah's been playing about .500 ball since their horrendous start, and they're at home, and presumably no Sullinger. I don't think a loss to them will require much luck.

That is why it would be nice if they both miss the playoffs because we would leapfrog those other non playoff teams in the westfor about the 13th pick, with a very very very small chance of getting a top 3 pick.
