Danny fires back at GM's that say he is overvaluing his players

Sources around the league have confirmed that calls have been made to the Celtics regarding Rondo, Avery Bradley, Jared Sullinger, Kelly Olynyk, Jeff Green and Kris Humphries. But as of last night, there were no ongoing talks regarding any of them.

There is no question the C’s would like to get something done this week, even if it is merely scrubbing their salary list a little further and getting in better position for this summer and beyond.

But Ainge told the Herald Friday he is also open to selling off some of his assets (picks, veterans, young players) if he can acquire a top of the rotation player now.

Ainge has been alternately amused and angered by some of the reports that are making their way through the mill.

“Another thing that comes out at this time of year that I find sort of comical is the talk that I’m asking too much for my players or being unrealistic with my players,” he said. “Well, you know, when someone calls you and says, ‘We’d like to have this guy,’ and I say, ‘OK, well, what do you want to give?’ and they say, ‘We’ll give you this or this’ — and I say, ‘Well, will you give me that?’ and they say no, then I tell them, ‘Then I won’t give my guy up’ — who in that is valuing their guys too much, me or them?

“I mean, we all have a choice to make deals or not, and I don’t blame somebody for how they value their players. That’s their decision.

“Usually it’s not anybody overvaluing their players; there’s just not a fit. You’re not a fit as a trade partner because you don’t have anything I want, and I like my player better than that player you just offered me. And what’s funny is that so do they because that’s why they just offered it. So the fact that we both like the guy that they’re trying to get, how does that make one side value him more than another?”

Ainge is a gamer.

I guess there is some activity after all.

These opposing managers are crazy if they get mad because Ainge won't make a trade with them.

It's weirdly worded by DA, but he's absolutely right. I think after the summer many GMs thought the Celts were having an "everything must go sale" and that's simply not the case.

Its probably a tad homerish, but I really wouldn't want a different GM running this team.  I think Ainge is awesome.  If he trades the pick on Thursday, it will be for the right reasons.  If he trades Rondo, it will be for the right reasons.  He's done a really good job here.

I think this all depends on who called who. By that I mean if Ainge called them offering lopsided trade proposals, then they could say he overvalued his guys. But if they called him and he shot an offer down, their complaining is just dishonest and childish.

Danny paid for being in this position (money in the Fab Melo trade, a 2nd rounder in the Lee trade) so he is in no hurry to trade with anyone. I love that.

If there's a good deal out there, Ainge will make it, but he won't trade for the sake of trading. I don't like the trade rumors, but I think we'll be fine after the trade deadline.

And as others have said, it's great to have Ainge as the GM.

Not buying any of these rumors really.
Stinks of Ainge building value in his biggest asset. It's what every other smart GM would do. Rockets GM and Toronto GM both want Rondo huh? Sacramento willing to give up the farm which just so happens to be what Ainge wants? Yet Rondo won't re-sign even if its 17 months away.
Ainge is the best. Brilliant marketing and turning away other celebrity GMs like Morey and Masa as he vows to keep his coveted veteran point guard for nothing less than the world.

All leads up to 2014 draft night and who's available to pick for the Celtics.
Just widens his opportunity and builds more value. He's like the very best car industry sales managers- masters of their art, masters at creating imaginary value and urgency.

Phoenix has 4 in the deepest draft since LeBron came out. So there's that...

Danny needs to fully blow it up. Right now the process of blowing it up is around 70% done. Green Rondo Bass Hump all need to go ASAP for the best package available. The top 5 pick in this years draft is too important.
