With what he has done to grow the game (and the value of the NBA franchises), he was a slam dunk.

Yeah, I would've been absolutely shocked if he didn't make it in the first time he was up for it. 

Love him or hate him (which most on these boards seem to do), the guy did a heckuva job growing the NBA and got a multi-BILLION dollar return for its owners.

Honest question: How much of that was simply a case of Stern riding the coattails of Bird, Magic, and Jordan? Wouldn't it have been more difficult to NOT turn those three into a cash cow?

Oh, no doubt those guys helped big time.  So did Nike hitching itself to Jordan. The '92 Olympic team certainly helped matters. 

I'd be naive to say that Stern didn't benefit at all from the right time/right place
