Sean Deveney of The Sporting News was on The Sports Hub this morning to talk about what the Celtics might be looking at between now and next summer.   After reiterating the interest around the league in Brandon Bass, he said Danny Ainge is really focused on making a big splash in the Summer of 2015.

While the draft picks are key to Danny Ainge’s rebuilding process, so is freeing up cap space. Deveney said Ainge may be open to taking on a bad contact, as long as the money comes off the books before the summer of 2015, when big names like LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Love are set to hit the free agent market.

“For them, it’s more about length than it is size. They don’t want anything that goes after 2015; they’re very focused on that 2015 free agent class. There should be some good players, and that’s when they’d have to re-up with Rondo should both sides choose to do that,” said Deveney. “That summer is when they expect to complete this turnaround and sign a big free agent, keep Rondo and with whoever they get in the draft this year, they should be in pretty good position to put those pieces together in the summer of 2015.”

Interesting. I find these news very, very, interesting, because I believe if DA is looking to build around Sully/Green, its code for packaging some of these players for a superstar, then picking one up in free agency.

Notable free agents:
Alridge
Love
Gasol
Al Jefferson
Tyson Chandler
DeAndre Jordan
Tony Parker
Omer Asik
Jeremy Lin
Anderson Varejao

I would love to pick up Gasol in FA, convince him we're making great moves, and to grab through a sign and trade then convince Kevin Love to stay to win a ring. Love may love LA, but... it isn't in the position to win in the future, and a nucleus of Gasol/Love/Rondo and someone else may contend for at least 3-4 years, with plenty of space and prospects/draft picks to help be able to grab some more pieces.

just a small note to a generally good post...gasol will be 34 years old this year and 35 in 2015. i have real doubts that he will be effective much beyond that. he seems to be more a short term fix for team that needs to think long term.
He's talking Marc Gasol who will only be 30

I really like the 2015 and 2016 free agent classes.

Hopefully the celtics will have a nice foundation in place by then and can lure one of those big time players.

2015: Aldridge, Love, Millsap, Jefferson, Asik, Chandler, Hibbert, Gasol... Possible restricted:  Vucevic, K. Leonard, Kanter, Thompson, etc.

2016: Durant, horford, Noah, Howard, Batum,.... Possible restricted:  Drummond, Lillard, Barnes, Beal, Valanciunas, Anthony Davis (not happening!!)

Now, that 2016 class is pretty phenomenal.

Aisshhhhh!

I meant Marc Gasol pabo! ;)

Besides Pau would expire this year, rendering him useless anyways. We should convince Durant to join us! Durant, Rondo, Love, and Gasol... Oh my god, we'd win for at least 4 years minimum.

Man I would love to see a Sully + Davis front court.  I think those two would really compliment each other, especially if Sully can perfect that jump shot.

I know it is a pipe dream, but I think Davis is a better fit than K Love, Aldridge, M Gasol, or Asik.

This to me means Ainge might actually prefer dealing green then bass. Obviously he wants to axe Wallace. Also makes sense why he didn't hesitate to take Anthony and was rumored to be willing to take stat if the Knicks took Wallace.

I have a gut feeling some trade will be made with ny if they're willing to take Wallace in a stat deal. Maybe green Bradley and Wallace for stat shumpert and a pick. Not sure. But if 2015 is the goal then it doesn't make as much sense to extend Bradley and if he can be used to dump Wallace then maybe he will be.

Interesting.

A year ago February, right after the trading deadline, I offered this analysis of Danny's "Plan(tm)":

http://www.celticsblog.com/2013/2/22/4016162/doom-despair-or-danny-has-a-plan

The main point was that, while their were alternate paths Danny could take within The Plan(tm), all of them pretty much pointed to the 2015-2016 season as the real season of having a 'new team'.
Quote
All roads through The Plan(tm) in the end, lead to a similar destination: Acquire the next superstar players somewhere around the 2016 season. Depending on the market, we may have to wait a year or so after that point. But that's the point at which Danny will have the tools to pull the big trigger.

Looks like the time and place to purchase a center--presuming no Embiid in the C's future.

That's when Rondo is also a FA. Yikes! That seems like a crazy play especially considering that BOS never gets premium FAs.

I hope Danny has the team more shored up by then and isn't banking on signing 3 bigtime FAs in the summer of 2015.

The better plan IMO would be to tank, use the pick (and Sully, etc) to trade for Love, extend both Love and Rondo and then try to add a center possibly through FA...

It's theoretically possible, although it may require a sign-and-trade.

Obviously we can all dream of a Marc Gasol and Kevin Love FA signing or trade. I do too, but to be honest I wouldnt be unhappy with an Al Jefferson or Tyson Chandler signing either. Adding any one of these to a Sullinger/Olynyk front line would be a huge upgrade as long as we dont break the bank.

We do need to seriously upgrade at the wing as well even though I wouldnt be unhappy if we kept one of Jeff Green or Avery Bradley for depth. I am honestly not big on the trading Rondo to draft Exxum or Smart plan.

Lets keep Rajon Rondo and build around him. I think that will help draw FA in the future as much as anything else Danny can do in terms of salesmanship.
