Sean Deveney of The Sporting News was on The Sports Hub this morning to talk about what the Celtics might be looking at between now and next summer.   After reiterating the interest around the league in Brandon Bass, he said Danny Ainge is really focused on making a big splash in the Summer of 2015.

While the draft picks are key to Danny Ainge’s rebuilding process, so is freeing up cap space. Deveney said Ainge may be open to taking on a bad contact, as long as the money comes off the books before the summer of 2015, when big names like LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Love are set to hit the free agent market.

“For them, it’s more about length than it is size. They don’t want anything that goes after 2015; they’re very focused on that 2015 free agent class. There should be some good players, and that’s when they’d have to re-up with Rondo should both sides choose to do that,” said Deveney. “That summer is when they expect to complete this turnaround and sign a big free agent, keep Rondo and with whoever they get in the draft this year, they should be in pretty good position to put those pieces together in the summer of 2015.”

Interesting. I find these news very, very, interesting, because I believe if DA is looking to build around Sully/Green, its code for packaging some of these players for a superstar, then picking one up in free agency.

Notable free agents:
Alridge
Love
Gasol
Al Jefferson
Tyson Chandler
DeAndre Jordan
Tony Parker
Omer Asik
Jeremy Lin
Anderson Varejao

I would love to pick up Gasol in FA, convince him we're making great moves, and to grab through a sign and trade then convince Kevin Love to stay to win a ring. Love may love LA, but... it isn't in the position to win in the future, and a nucleus of Gasol/Love/Rondo and someone else may contend for at least 3-4 years, with plenty of space and prospects/draft picks to help be able to grab some more pieces.

AKA we want the freedom to sign players around Rondo if he stays, or the freedom to fully blow it up if he leaves.

We want to be the Heat with Wade, not the Cavs with cap clogged for years after our "star" hits FA.

We'll see if it happens.

I actually think the players in 2015 FA fit Rondo better than Melo. Of course Lebron and Rondo would be a godly duo... But that isn't going to happen.. LOL!

Basically, Ainge disagrees with anyone who thinks it will be at least 3-5 years before the Celtics can be a contender.

I mean it is common sense, but this means DA wouldn't mind taking on expiring contracts.

I don't really like this method, because there is no guarantee players will play or join as free agents in the Celtics but... one can dream right?

how much money do we actually have by 2015 as is?

Rondo/Love/Marc Gasol does sound like a great duo. We can even do a sign and trade for one of them. Also, say, we do grab 2 FA in 2015, I hope we also have a top 3 pick in 2014

We may be looking at

Rondo/Wiggins or Parker or Smart or Exum/Love/Gasol

Would love to have a combo of Love and Gasol to join Rondo and maybe use Sullinger to trade for a SF after we draft Wiggins.

Of course I would love to be 6'4" have the body of a god and be a millionaire too, doesn't mean its going to happen.

The good thing about cap space is that it can be used for things other than free agents.  For instance, the Cavs picked up Kyrie Irving and multiple future #1 picks just for taking on pretty minor salary dumps.  The Jazz just got two #1s for one year of salary commitment.

So, even if things don't pan out in free agency, there are a lot of options.  (The worst possible option:  imitating Joe Dumars and signing mediocre players to big contracts.)

Gasol and Love/Aldridge would be the best front big man combo in the league. Perfect for each other.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

I had always pictured you as such. Now when I read your posts I will imagine a penniless Paul Giamatti.

I really like the 2015 and 2016 free agent classes.

Hopefully the celtics will have a nice foundation in place by then and can lure one of those big time players.

2015: Aldridge, Love, Millsap, Jefferson, Asik, Chandler, Hibbert, Gasol... Possible restricted:  Vucevic, K. Leonard, Kanter, Thompson, etc.

2016: Durant, horford, Noah, Howard, Batum,.... Possible restricted:  Drummond, Lillard, Barnes, Beal, Valanciunas, Anthony Davis (not happening!!)

Not quite though I think I compare better to a bald Robert DeNiro.

just a small note to a generally good post...gasol will be 34 years old this year and 35 in 2015. i have real doubts that he will be effective much beyond that. he seems to be more a short term fix for team that needs to think long term.
